OPERATING AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS

Halliburton Lo Torc Plug Valve 1-in. and 1.3-in. Bore Sizes

ASSEMBLING THE VALVES
1. Install the seals inside the plug body and the adjusting nut. 2. Install the retaining pins in the body and place an O-ring on the adjusting nut and O-rings on the outside of the inserts. 3. Coat the plug, the inserts, and the adjusting nut threads and fill the void spaces inside the body and the adjusting nut with the recommended plug-valve lubricant (Part No. 70.31058). 4. Place the plug through the adjusting nut. For a 1-in. valve, leave space for the insert lips between the plug and the adjusting nut. 5. Place the inserts on the plug and align the fluid passage holes through the inserts with the hole through the plug. 6. Fasten the plug and the inserts to the adjusting nut with the capscrew and the washers. 7. Place the plug and the inserts into the body with the retaining pins in the body protruding into the slots in the inserts. 8. Screw the adjusting nut into the body while rotating the plug to distribute excess lubricant. 9. Place the handle adapter on the plug with the adapter flow-indicator lugs aligned with the slots on the operating end of the plug. The cutout on the bottom of the handle adapter fits over the stop capscrew. Caution Assemble these parts properly. Improper assembly of these parts can result in poor valve performance or unsafe operating characteristics.

10. Fasten the handle adapter to the plug with the capscrew and the washers.

ADJUSTING AND OPERATING THE VALVES AT ZERO PRESSURE

Set and maintain the plug operating torque at approximately 30 to 40 lb-ft. The operating torque can be decreased by screwing the adjusting nut out of the body, but this setting can allow leakage through the valve. Use the handle adapter on the valve to open and close the valve. The handle adapter on the valve is located on the opposite end from the adjusting end. Because of the Lo Torc Plug Valves wide range of application, no specific frequency of maintenance or inservice inspection can be recommended. Periodic, frequent inspections of each valve will help you predict the life or usefulness of the plug and the inserts. Replacing these parts when they are eroded or worn will help prevent any erosion of the body.

DISASSEMBLING AND ASSEMBLING THE VALVES

1. Remove the wrench (Loc. 15) or the handle adapter (Loc. 2) with the stop collar (Loc. 14). 2. Loosen the adjusting nut with the operating bar or the hex wrench. Remove the adjusting nut, the plug (Loc. 12), and the inserts (Loc. 10). If necessary, place a wood block on top of the plug stem and tap downward. 3. Inspect the valve body (Loc. 1) for interior erosion or pitting. Caution If seal surfaces have deteriorated, remove the valve from service. Otherwise, leakage could result.

4. Replace the O-rings (Loc. 11) on the inserts if necessary. handle-adapter end) where a clockwise rotation closes the valve. The flow-indicator lugs on the handle adapter indicate the direction of the fluid hole through the plug. Keep the flow-indicator lugs in line with the flowindicator slots on the plug. 5. Replace the O-ring sealing the adjusting nut if the O-ring is worn. 6. Replace the plug-stem packing (Loc. 9) at the top and bottom of the plug if necessary. 7. Replace the inserts with standard parts if the valve has shown signs of leakage or if the inserts show any excessive wear or pitting. 8. Wipe all old lubricant from inside the valve body.

MAINTAINING AND INSPECTING THE VALVES

To repair valves in the line, remove the handle adapter and screw the adjusting nut counterclockwise. It is not necessary to remove the plug from the adjusting nut if the plug is still serviceable. Assemble new inserts with O-rings on the plug as described in Step 4 on Page 1. Caution Do not weld the bodies of valves. Valve bodies are made of heat-treated alloy steel that should not be welded. Since the inserts can wash out and erode the body before leakage is noted, inspect valves regularly to determine the approximate life of the inserts and plugs. Continued use of worn plugs and inserts will shorten the life of the body considerably.

REASSEMBLING THE VALVE

1. Install O-rings in the recesses of the inserts and in the adjusting nut groove. 2. Install the plug stem seals (Loc. 9) in the recesses in the top of the valve body and in the adjusting nut. 3. Coat the cleaned plug, the inserts, and the adjusting nut threads with the recommended plug-valve lubricant. Fill the void spaces inside the valves with the same lubricant. This lubricant can be ordered in 3/4-lb packages under Part No. 70.31058. 4. Install the lower end of the plug through the adjusting nut and push the plug down to the shoulder.

Caution

Page 2

5. Use the capscrews, the flat washer, and the lock washer to secure the adjusting plug to the adjusting nut. 6. Tighten the capscrew. 7. Verify that the insert retaining pins (Loc. 13) inside the body are positioned properly. 8. Place the inserts on the adjusting nut around the plug. 9. Align the flow holes in the inserts with the hole through the plug. 10. Place the plug, the inserts, and the adjusting nut into the valve body so that the insert retaining pins slide into the slots in the inserts. 11. Tighten the adjusting nut into the body with the prescribed torque for adequate sealing (see Adjusting the Valve at Zero Pressure), rotating the plug while tightening it to distribute the lubricant. 12. Install the stop collars and the handle adapter (or wrench) on top of the valve. Be sure the flow indicator lugs of the handle adapter are aligned with the slot in the top stem of the plug. Note: Improper assembly of these parts can result in poor valve performance or unsafe operating characteristics.

Extremely high working pressures can require higher torque values to properly seal the valve. If so, this higher torque adjustment should be maintained by checking the adjusting nut at regular intervals. Caution Do not weld the bodies of valves. Valve bodies are made of heat-treated alloy steel that should not be welded. Since the inserts can wash out and erode the body before leakage is detected, inspect valves regularly to determine the approximate life of the inserts and plugs. Continued use of worn plugs and inserts will shorten the life of the body considerably.

ADJUSTING THE VALVE AT ZERO PRESSURE

Adjusting a Lo Torc Plug Valve properly is imperative to maintain tight sealing under pressure. The inserts should be adjusted to provide the torque to rotate the plug. [This adjustment is made by tightening or loosening the adjusting nut (Loc. 7).] Table 1Adjusting the Valve at Zero Pressure
