WHAT IS AN ATTITUDE?
An attitude is "a relatively enduring organization of beliefs, feelings, and behavioral tendencies towards socially significant objects, groups, events or symbols" (Hogg & Vaughan 2005, p. 150)
Although there are three branches to the Tri- component model of attitudes and they have been described separately, the tri- component model proposes that all three must be present before it can be said that an attitude exists. In most cases the affective, behavioral and cognitive components are consistent. An example of this is that a person may avoid a spider (behavioral component) because youre scared of spiders (affective component) and believe that spiders can harm you (cognitive component)
The cognitive component refers to the persons beliefs, knowledge and thoughts. It is a persons mental representation of an object which includes his or hers observation and beliefs about a person, group, event, situation or issue. Our beliefs are linked to what we know about the world Beliefs are developed from our experiences in our lives, though some beliefs are built on factual information, however some are false beliefs, some beliefs can be verified and others cannot be proven.
The behavior component is the active element of an attitude, It refers to the persons behavior when directed towards a situation, object or person. Examples Reacting when seeing a lion or reacting when seeing a person you love.
