Training Resources will be holding the Kootenay Lake
First Annual BC Family Day Fishing Derby from Febru-
ary 9 to February 11, 2013.
But dont expect just any old fshing derby. Organ-
izers wanted to do a few things diferently with the
Kootenay Lake First Annual BC Family Day Fishing
Derby. Acutely aware of the impact fshing derbies
could have on the Kootenay
Lake ecosystem, they have de-
cided to award prizes based on
the length of the fsh instead
of weight. Tis way they hope
to encourage people to catch
and release their fsh right
away if it isnt long enough.
Tree weigh stations, one at
Balfour, one at Twin Bays,
and one mobile station on
the lake means competitors
wont have far to go to have
their catch measured. Derby
of cials will be announcing
on the radio the lengths of the
currently winning fsh as they
are recorded. In case anyone
happens to miss which fsh is
in the lead a derby of cial will
be announcing current stand-
ings every hour on the hour
on Channel 68. Competitors
can also call 250-428-0318 to
confrm lengths with of cials.
Another big diference is the
prize system. Many derbies of-
fer a portion of the total tickets
sold as a prize, 50% of the pro-
ceeds for frst place for example.
Tis means that a derby winner
never really knows what the
prize will be until aferwards.

Annual BC Family Day Fishing
Derby prizes are set in advance.
For Rainbow Trout frst place
wins is $5000, second place
wins $2,000 and third place is
awarded $500. Tere are also
prizes for Dolly Varden; $2000
for frst place, $1000 for second

Making Resolutions For 2013?
Resolve To Be Safe
While most resolutions involve vows to exercise more
and adopt healthy eating habits, BC Ambulance Service
(BCAS) has three suggestions for resolutions that can
make the world a safer place for you, your family and your
community.
Learn CPR. BCAS attends 2,400 to 2,800 cardiac arrest
calls each year. Only 12 per cent of British Columbians who
sufer a cardiac arrest survive; the majority of incidents occur
at home. Bystander CPR is critical to patient survival of a
sudden cardiac arrest, said BCAS Superintendent Okanagan
North Norm Matheson. We know that bystander CPR saves
lives the more we can encourage everyone to be trained in
CPR, the greater the chance of saving lives and ensuring a
happy ending to what could be a devastating event.
Teach your children to call 9-1-1. Teaching your child
to call 9-1-1 and to know their home address is one of
the most important things you can do to help keep you
and your loved ones safe at home, said Vancouver Island
BCAS Emergency Medical Dispatcher Brad Mitchell.
Even very young children can learn to call 9-1-1 start
with the basics when your child is three or four; role-play
some simple scenarios and revisit the process every year.
Install proper safety latches on windows. Screens
should never be relied on for safety; they are not strong
enough to withstand the weight of a child pushing against
them. Paramedics see the critical injuries that result from
falls from windows from broken bones to facial and
head trauma.

Increased Tuition Support
For Te Unemployed
For people living in Slocan, Winlaw, Passmore or any-
where in the Slocan Valley who are looking for work,
Kootenay Career Development Society/Work BC has
some good news.
Te BC Government has announced an increase in
the tuition cap for eligible unemployed British Colum-
bians accessing skills training through the Employment
Program of BC. Tat means job seekers accessing ser-
vices through the Kootenay Career Development Soci-
ety/WorkBC Employment Services Centre at the WE
Graham Community Learning Centre in Slocan may
now be eligible for up to a maximum of $7500 in tuition
funding for skills training. Previously, tuition support
was capped at $4000.
Tis change in the tuition cap will give people in these
communities who are looking for work a better oppor-
tunity to develop and upgrade their skills. Were commit-
ted to working with our clients to make sure they have the
support and skills they need to fnd jobs and take advan-
tage of identifed labour market needs thats econom-
ic-speak for where the jobs are.
Popular training options such as truck driving, health
care aid, human services, and trades are likely to be more
accessible due to the additional fexibility around levels of
tuition support.
Te Employment Program of BC, launched in April
2012, is designed to ofer a full suite of employment pro-
grams to all eligible unemployed British Columbians,
including specialized populations, while ensuring quick
and easy access through a single door. In these commun-
ities, there are areas where the need for skilled workers
is growing. Truck drivers, metal fabricators, health care
aides, and human service workers are in demand in our
local region.

Shirley Dianne Lipsack (Traxel) of
Kaslo, British Columbia passed away at
the Victorian Community Health Centre
in Kaslo on December 18, 2012 due to
complications from ovarian cancer.
Shirley came to Kaslo from Calgary in
the mid 2000s to be with Kurt Patalla,
who passed away on November 8, 2011.
She worked at the Kaslo Drug Store and
was a member of St. Andrews Church.
Shirley was actively involved in the
community and volunteered with a
number of charities.
She is survived by her one daughter,
Tracy (Michael) Fawcett of Calgary;
and grandchildren Zachary Fawcett
of Calgary, and Bronwyn (Jeff) Butler
of Calgary; her beloved Jack Russell
Terrier, Mikey; brothers Norman
(Jerolyn) Traxel and Keith Traxel, sister
Darlene (Brian) Kemp, along with
numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley
also leaves behind Kurts sons Gordon
Patalla of Vancouver Island and Robert
(Lisa) Patalla of Calgary.
Cremation has taken place and a
funeral service will be held in Kaslo in
late spring or early summer 2013. As
per her wishes, the funeral will be held
at St. Andrews United Church, and
will be followed by interment at the
Kaslo Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy, the
family is requesting that donations be
made to the Cancer Society.
Arrangements are under the direction
of Thompson Funeral Service Ltd.

Bessie passed away peacefully on December 22,
2012 at the age of 98 years, with her family by her side.
Predeceased by her loving husband George, she is

Corey and Stacey; and her great grandchildren
Nicolas, Paige, Kyle and Haydn, who were the love
of her life.
For their loving care, the family wishes to thank the
doctors and nursing staff at the
victorian Health Centre in Kaslo.
No funeral service by request.

Bears And People In 2012?
Tere were 15 black bears destroyed due to human-bear
confict in Nelson, and RDCK Areas E and F (as of Nov-
ember 23). Six of those bears were destroyed in the City
of Nelson. No grizzly bears were destroyed in Nelson or
Areas E and F in 2012.
We can do better. We can clean up our communities
so that we do not tempt bears into our neighbourhoods
and to our homes. Bears that become used to feeding on
food near our homes are destroyed because they can de-
stroy property, may even enter homes or become risks to
human safety. Once again, garbage was the major bear
attractant noted in all of our communities, accounting
for almost half of the calls to the Conservation Of cer
Service. Fruit Trees accounted for 20% of the calls fol-
lowed by livestock (chickens, rabbits, a donkey), outdoor
freezers, berry bushes, compost, and bird feeders.
How do you manage your bear attractants? By keep-
ing garbage indoors or in a secure location (not in the
carport, or in the back alley) until the day of collection or
until you take it to the landfll. If you do not have a secure
location for garbage storage, then you can freeze lef-over
food and put it in your garbage when you dispose of the
garbage. You can also purchase a bear-resistant garbage
can. You can become part of the order of bear-resistant
cans ($224 taxes and shipping included). Contact Tea for

Manage your fruit trees. Prune them to increase pro-
ductivity and to keep the fruit within reach of pickers.
Keep the windfall from collecting on the ground and if
you cannot pick your fruit, contact Harvest Rescue to
help out with picking your fruit.
Learn how to compost properly. Well-maintained
compost does not smell and so is less likely to attract a
bear.
Bears have an amazing capacity to fnd food through
scent: outdoor freezers and fridges attract bears. Consid-
er moving those appliances indoors.
Predator electric-fencing is highly efective in keeping
bears from gaining access to chicken coops and other
livestock enclosures. Check out how to construct a sim-
ple predator electric fence at www.bearaware.bc.ca.
It is nearing the end of the bear season and Bear Aware
is winding up our season. Tere are, however, still bears
out looking for food, even now, near the end of Novem-
ber. Please manage your attractants until well into De-
cember. Lets help the bears make it up to the den for
hibernation.

Recycling Centre Donation
Te Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK)
and the Nelson Jr. Leafs Recycling Centre are pleased to
support the Kootenay Lake Hospital (KLH) Foundation.
Tis month a donation of $7000 will be presented to the
KLH foundation, representing the 2012 profts from bev-
erage containers collected at the Nelson Transfer Station.
In total the program has contributed over $20,000 in
three years to KLH foundation fundraising eforts.
We are pleased to continue to support the Kootenay
Lake Hospital Foundations eforts to serve this commun-
ity. Refundable containers are helping to fund the pur-
chase of valuable hospital equipment, thanks to all the
people who are contributing to this worthy cause stated

Te RDCK and the Nelson Leafs Recycling Center have
hosted a beverage container recycling program at the Nel-
son transfer station since 2010. Recycling bins provide
residents with a convenient place to recycle refundable
beverage containers. Tis partnership is a cooperative
efort and allows both organizations to provide a worth-
while service with a meaningful beneft to the commun-
ity. stated Uli Wolf, General Manager of Environmental
Services for the RDCK.
Not only are we contributing to improving the servi-
ces of our local hospital, but we are also helping to keep
recyclable materials out of the landfll.
All refundable beverage containers and milk containers
(non-refundable) are accepted in the bins at the Transfer
Station, sorting is not required! Residents must place indi-
vidual containers into the bins, no bulk loads are accepted.
Large volumes of containers are accepted at the Recycling
Centre (Bottle Depot) located at 120 Silica Street in Nelson.
In BC, approximately one billion beverage contain-
ers are recycled each year. Recycling saves energy, re-
duces greenhouse gas emissions, and relieves pressure
on non-renewable resources. For more information on
