3. Introduction a. Vision

2011

To provide our customers with the best service, repairs and maintenance facility for household and electronic appliances! b. Mission To be the most reliable and efficient after-sales-service centre for household and electronic appliances in Sri Lanka c. Company Profile In the early 1970s, Mrs. Aban Pestonjee felt that women wasted too much valuable time and energy doing household chores manually when simple household appliances could make their lives much easier, and leave them more free time for leisure and relaxation. She also believed that women should make them-selves more useful and also spend more time with their husbands and children instead of merely housekeeping. In the mid 1970s a workshop was set up, in Mrs.Pestonjees garage, to service and repair the used items she bought at the auctions. The workshop consisted of only one employee, Mr. Allan Raffel who was skilled in servicing and repairing electronic appliances. Mr. Raffel is now a Director of Abans Group and heads Abans Service Department. With the advent of the open economy in 1978 and the acquisition of international agencies of world renowned brands Abans business expanded phenomenally and it became necessary to establish more sophisticated service facilities. A fully equipped Service Centre was set up at 590, Galle Road, Kollupitiya with experienced technicians and sophisticated equipment and a fully fledged Call Centre. Today, Abans Service Centre is fully computerized and situated in a multi-storeyed modern building at 506 B, Galle Road, Colombo 6 with state-of-the-art equipment and factory trained skilled technicians. The Service Centre has 7 Regional Centers which are called Customer Care Service Centres in major towns and Cities Island wide and 70 Authorized Service Agents in smaller towns. The after sales service for all products sold at Abans 250 showrooms Island wide is carried out by the Regional Centres & by the Authorized Service Agents.

6. Corporate Social Responsibility Dedication for Education

2011

Abans has come a long way from the small store in Bambalapitiya where Mrs. Aban Pestonjee and her husband, Mr. Pesi Pestonjee first set up shop. Now, at its present size of 21 companies, Abans employs over 6000 staff and is continuously looking for fresh talent. However, in our recruitment efforts, we have noticed the large dearth of English literacy, IT education and career guidance amongst our many young applicants. Abans' aim is to allow everyone to reach their fullest potential with access to the best education available. It is with this aim in mind that Abans has undertaken a CSR initiative both to enhance the potential of its own workforce and their families, but, also for the generations of Sri Lankans yet to join the workforce. Abans' CSR initiative is a strategic project to increase the employability of Sri Lanka's future workforce. Being an employer in South Asia and a company originally founded by a woman, the staff at Abans is also passionate about women's empowerment through education. Educating future mothers means a more educated, healthier, driven workforce. A dearth of IT and specialized skills education, and career guidance in Sri Lanka have been identified as the factors separating the "haves" from the "have-not". Abans feels that this is exactly where our CSR efforts should be focused on. We have kicked off our CSR initiatives by starting right in our very own homes - we have started a series of programs providing free IT education to our employees' children. Moving on to benefit the rest of Sri Lanka - we've represented ourselves at the EDEX fair in January and provided a CV submission service where candidates were guaranteed call-backs and resume forwarding to not only Abans locations but also to the Sri Lankan Jobs search engine, Jobs net. CSR at Abans will not become a stagnant term - initiatives will continue to grow and serve the knowledge enhancement of future generations of Sri Lankans. The following photo gallery serves to illustrate our firm commitment to enhancing the landscape of Education for today's Sri Lankan generations and beyond.

a. External Ethics 1. Career Guidance/ Resources Help for Schools

2011

Schools in Wattala such as St. Annes Convent, St. Anthonys College & Nayakakanda Convent were the initial participants in our CSR efforts in September 2006. We provided career guidance to 300 A/L and Passed students. Students of Lumbini College were also part of the Abans career guidance program. St. Sebastians College, Moratuwa received sponsorship from Abans in October 2006 for the school prefects day. This event was a colorful evening which brought together prefects from the leading schools in Colombo. As part of education infrastructure development we donated chairs and a water pump to a rural school in Dambulla, which had been deprived of these facilities. Abans will work closely with the school to enhance standards and facilities.

2. EDEX 2007 Abans was part of Sri Lankas largest careers export. We welcomed university graduates and employment seekers to learn about Abans and get a clear perspective of the available career paths.

b. Internal Ethics 1. Bringing CSR Home In true spirit we have decided to offer the children or our valued employees the opportunity to participant in an IT certification program. The program curriculum, promotional material, and certificates were designed by the training department. The program facilitation and certification exams were also be conducted by the staff of the training department. 6. CSR Implications, Findings and Suggestions

2011

Abans as part of the CSR subcommittee focused on enhancing primary education, has teamed up with other leading organizations in Sri Lanka and focused our efforts towards the children of the plantation workers. The main areas of focus will be English education and also a drive to keep children in school. Empowering Women Women's empowerment has been a key focus area in the Abans CSR effort and we have worked very closely in this endeavor with the WCIC. Nutrition system LG, a world leader in refrigerators, introduces the preserve nutrition system (PN) for the first time in Sri Lanka. LG also the first to introduce frost free, CFC free & rust free refrigerators has now introduced the unique PN system. Those three works together encounter the factors which has resulted unpleasant odors, degeneration and staleness of food thus maintaining the natural flavor, freshness and nutritive value for longer periods and is mostly effective with food that is moist. LG is marketed by Abans with its efficient after sales service and spares. FIR Lamp - Light emitted from a special ceramic lamp in the chiller compartment strengthens oscillation of water molecules at their natural frequency through the resonance effect, slowing down protein degeneration, keeping freshness and taste for much longer periods. Findings and Suggestions Whether they helping society internal ethics not much influent Employees under stress all the seasons so they may have to conduct stress management program Sometimes wagers not given on date it been postponing its not ethical .employees waiting to get their salary they planning lot of thing on the following date so it makes employees Dissatisfy. Employees satisfaction makes customers happy. Specially this is customer base company customer satisfaction is important They not much in to eco friendly system even though they provide cfc free refrigerators They didnt support eco friendly program much and there is no plant in the office environment. If they can plant some plant it will help to control employee stress also. Even though they exceeding the profit limit they didnt expand salary limit until employee going to leave the organization-they have to fir with the employees too Sometimes workers change the parts of customer goods without knowing the company or customers for their personal uses it is unethical and illegal they should supervise technicians to prevent these situation.

10. Business Ethics and CSR Implications The apparel industry is frequently accused of roaming the world in search of the lowest costs, which may involve using child labor and sweatshop factories. The stigma of being involved with unethical sub-contractors can tarnish a brand for years. Major brands such as Victoria's Secret, Gap, Marks & Spencer and Nike want to protect their reputations as well as their margins by complying with ethical manufacturing initiatives, and they've turned to MAS Holdings, a $ 650 million apparel manufacturer based in Colombo, Sri Lanka Worker at a MAS factory.

Women go beyond program MAS has set the global apparel industry standard for compliance by developing Women Go Beyond, a program to educate and empower its 92% female workforce. Most corporate social responsibility (CSR) program have little to do with a company's strategy, but MAS is trying to differentiate itself strategically from a horde of low-cost competitors throughout the developing world.. MAS has generated double-digit annual revenue growth while avoiding sweatshop conditions and spending 3% - 4% of costs on employee and philanthropic program. It provides transport to work, free meals, medical care and on-site banking at all its plants. It also funds hospitals, schools and scholarships in the rural villages where its plants are located. Mahesh says: "We believe strongly that if the people we work with have their basic needs taken care of, they are freer to concentrate on the work at hand and bring out their best. MAS broke the mould by basing its operations near villages so that workers, mostly female, would not have to leave their families and move to cities. More usually, women in their late teens would move away from their home villages to the free trade manufacturing zones where they would live in crowded hostels by building its plants in rural villages. MAS Holding company provides local employment and allows workers to remain with their families which also will felicitate their Empowered Women for the 5th consecutive year on 12th November 2008 at the MAS Institute of Management Technology, Thulhiriya. The annual Empowered Women of the Year awards are a focus of the Go Beyond program, through which employees excelling in all walks of life are recognized. The program aims to empower employees and impact communities by championing the cause of womens empowerment in society. The ceremony will focus on celebrating Sri Lankan women of excellence, including all of the past empowered women as well as well known personalities such as Rosy Senanayake, Susanthika Jayasinghe and Nanda Malini, who are also guests of honors at the event. MAS Holdings donates Rs 45 Mn to cancer hospital July 01, 2010 (Sri Lanka).

MAS Holdings, community investment is more of a way of being. Throughout the years as the company grew, so did the communities that they operated. The company focused its energy and resources to uplift education in the communities, improve and upgrade community health infrastructure and sports. 2009 saw MAS channel their resources towards a worthy national cause - a Forty Five Million Rupee (USD 400,000) upgrade of equipment at the National cancer Institute (NCI). More than 15,000 people from all corners of the country make their way to Maharagama each year relying on the NCI, the only public cancer institute in Sri Lanka dedicated to the diagnosis and follow-up treatment of cancer patients. Apart from facilitating patients with identification of cancers and specialized care, the NCI also functions as a training centre for undergraduates of the medical faculties Colombo, Kelaniya and Sri Jayawardanapura as well as for post graduate students of Colombo. Equipment Scarcity One of the biggest challenges faced by the cancer hospital is the lack of proper equipment. Diagnostic facilities, surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are provided as services, but the increasing number of patients called for new and advanced medical equipment and facilities. This caused grievous concern among the medical staff of the NCI. Come 2009, things changed. For MAS, it has always been about doing the right thing, a concept embedded into the companys core values. We have a role to play in community development. We step in when we see a need that must be addressed. That is our community spirit. It is in this context that MAS approached the cancer hospital to identify their most urgent needs in order to provide patients better health care and facilities.1

Purpose-built eco-manufacturing plant for lingerie It is an initiative undertaken by MAS Holdings under the groundbreaking sustainability plan of Marks & Spencer. They set out to create a green factory both in terms of building and the way it is run. They have created a facility that is naturally cooler (a challenge in tropical humid conditions) and used a low-energy cooling system. The factory uses less resources to run compared to similar facilities. It is powered by renewable energy and boasts of the largest solar PV installation in the country, said Mr Vidhura Ralapanawe, Manager Sustainability & Communications. All employees working in the facility enjoy natural light, outside views, good thermal comfort and high air quality moving far beyond traditional definitions of employee wellbeing. The facility is built with a special eco-brick, and uses rainwater for toilet flushing. About 400 trees were planted to help cool the environment and enhance bio-diversity. Discussing the challenges the company faced while building this one of its kind facility in Sri Lanka.Mr Vidhura Ralapanawe stated, their biggest challenge was to create a low-energy cooling mechanism within the buildings- something that dramatically reduce the energy compared to A/C, In a high heat humidity environment, Which successfully did with their environment of the factory While sharing information regarding the basic differences between manufacturing eco friendly products in comparison to others, the Manager asserts, Business Environment - 205 Page 20

The products are manufactured at a facility built and operated on sound environmental principles. With the renewed global focus on environmental sustainability, consumers will look for companies to show leadership in greening manufacturing processes. All goods manufactured at MAS Thurulie plant are made exclusively for Marks and Spencer of UK. They are not available in Sri Lanka. They are sold with a special eco-label, highlighting the fact that they were produced in a green manufacturing facility The new facility, to be managed and operated by Nike, will focus on skill development and classroom training for its employees and employees of strategic manufacturing partners. They win the market by making it competitive advantage and there are companys which shows their ethical but theyre not actually do it they do it for survive in the market. Only it can know when you are study depth in to that company. But as a society that is our responsibility be ethical and develop with sustainability. As a company there is much more responsibility than individual
