Volume 13, Number 2

Endurance
And let us run with endurance Hebrews 12:1 Distance running is really tough. It is not for sissies or quitters. Knute Rockne has been closely associated with the challenging line, When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Billy Ocean put it to music, and it reverberates with us because of its positive message. We like to believe that we are tough. Well, nothing spells tough better than endurance. Lets not fool ourselves. Enduring is more than just making it to the end of the race. Endurance has to do with handling difficult and sometimes oppressive challenges. There may even be some very real pain. We may like a challenge, but dont like oppressive ones or any pain. If our run becomes more painful or difficult than planned, it is common for us to reduce our efforts in the hope of lessening the pain. When I was a young boy, we had to run laps around the playground. On those occasions, when one of us would get a side stitch, the gym teacher would tell us to breathe deep and just run through it. No slack was accepted. We were to tough it out. While toughing it out is not always the best advice in physical endeavor, it is true that there is a tough, sometimes painful price for real accomplishment. In Pauls valedictory statement to Timothy, he states that he had fought the good fight and had finished the race. There is no easy way to fight and finish. Most of the time, it is a matter of endurance in commitment. Whatever part of the race of life you are running, do it with endurance. Remember, there is one who ran the race ahead of you. Russ
