TIPS FOR RATIONAL CLOZE:

1. Subject and verb agreement. Example: 1. They go to the museum by bus. 2. The duck is swimming in the pond. 2. After modals / to : verb ( root word ) Modals: can/could/shall/should/will/would/may/might/must/ought to Example: 1. She must study hard. 2. My mother can cook very well. 3. After the article the: adjective ( superlative ) Example: 1. That is the highest building in this area. 2. She is the most beautiful girl in the class. 4. Active subject + modal + be = verb ( present participle ) Example: 1. The boys will be going to Kathmandu next week. 2. My mother will be reading a story for us later. 5. Passive subject + modal + be = verb ( past participle ) Example: 1. The books must be returned to the library. 2. This fruit can be eaten raw.

6. Verb + ing form: As adjectives: ( no action ) Example: 1. This morning I saw a flying carpet. 2. My mother bought me a talking parrot. 3. I always enjoy reading interesting novels. As gerunds: ( no action ) Example: 1. Jogging is my hobby. 2. Climbing up a hill is not an easy task. 3. You must continue studying if you want to pass your exams. As verbs in continuous tenses: Example: 1. The water in the river is flowing smoothly. 2. I was having my dinner when the accident occurred. 3. She has been studying since this morning. 7. After has/have/had : verb ( past participle ) Example: 1. She has taken her dinner. 2. The girls have bought their books. 3. The bus had gone when we arrived. 8. After preposition: verb ( present participle: verb + ing ) Example: 1. After having lunch, they took a rest. 2. The students wash their hands before eating. 3. The boy was punished for copying during the exams.
