JV football team racks up 357 yards to beat Stevenson

The Romeo High junior v arsity football team kept its record unblemished at 5-0 with a hard-fought, 22-1 4, MAC-crossov er win against Sterling Heights Stev enson last Thursday at Romeo. And, they earned it. The Bulldogs racked up 357 total y ards against the bigger Titans; 27 5 of it on the ground. Running back Brent Newsome (1 26 y ards on 1 5 carries and 3TD's) opened the scoring early in the first quarter with a 51 -y ard touchdown run to make it 6-0 Romeo. Quarterback Ty ler Armstrong (6-of-9 for 82 y ards) connected with Blake Cushingberry for the two points to make it 8-0. Midway through the second quarter a Romeo fumble led to a short field and touchdown pass for Stev enson to cut the lead to 8-6. The two-point ex tra point try was no good, howev er, leav ing the score right where it was. Newsome would score again later in the second on a 1 -y ard run that was set up by a 34-y ard reception by Joe Wilson. Newsome added the two points to make it 1 6-6 Romeo. Wilson helped the Bulldogs keep their lead at the half when he made a brilliant interception that halted the Titans' last driv e of the second quarter. "We did a lot of nice things in the first half offensiv ely , but the defense really sav ed our butts,'' said Romeo coach Tim Bussineau. "We turned the ball ov er a couple of times and the defense came up with some big stops.'' Newsome gav e Romeo a 22-6 lead with a 1 6-y ard TD run with 4:00 left in the third, but the ex tra point attempt was no good leav ing the door open for the Titans who were more than happy to step through. Stev enson scored late in the third on a 1 9-y ard touchdown pass to cut the lead to eight points, 22-1 4, after the two-pointer
