Transmission and
-

Dubliners by James Joyce

What is Transmission?

Journey of a text Role of scribes, editors, proof-readers, publishers etc. Basic aesthetic features

.............................................................................................

One cannot read a book: one can only reread it.-Vladimir Nabokov Inhibitions to authors original intentions? Nature of meaning itself?

Publishing Dubliners

1904-14
The printer denounces 'Two Gallants' and 'Counterparts'. A Dubliner would denounce 'Ivy Day in the Committee Room'. The more subtle inquisitor will denounce 'An Encounter', the enmity of which the printer cannot see because he is..a plain, blunt man. The Irish priest will denounce 'The Sisters'. The Irish Boarding House keeper will denounce 'The Boarding House'. -Joyce.

Joyce's intentions

Documentation of Letters I seriously believe that you will retard the course of civilisation in Ireland by preventing the Irish people from having one good look at themselves in my nicely polished lookingglass-Joyce: 23rd June 1906. Threatened by transmission process?

.................................................................................................

Truth has a more ascertainable and more real dominion [than beauty]. Art is true to itself when it deals with truth. -Joyce (Drama and Life) The word, the exact expression I have used, is in my opinion the one expression in the English language which can create on the reader the effect which I wish to create. -Joyce

Conclusion

Wider role of literature in society-author's original intention's of great importance! Future of transmission?
