Firefox is already running but is not

responding
If you cannot start Firefox, the problem may be one of several causes. This article
describes various situations in which Firefox does not start and the steps you can
take to address the issue.

The program must close to allow a previous installation attempt to complete. Please
restart.

If you are receiving the above error message on a Windows Vista system while
attempting to start Firefox, try to restart the program. If the problem persists, do the
following:

Restart your computer.

Select the Start Menu in the Windows Taskbar.

In the Search box, enter the following: %APPDATA% Press Enter.

From the Application Data folder, navigate to Local\VirtualStore\Program

Files\Mozilla Firefox. Delete the file xpicleanup.dat.

Restart Firefox

Error opening file for writing...

If you receive the above error when launching Firefox on a Windows system, you
may be required by Firefox to log in as an administrator. You can either reboot the
computer or, if you have an administrator account, you can execute the program as
an administrator.

Find the firefox.exe program file in the Firefox application folder on your
system.

Right-click the icon.

Windows XP: Select Run As.... Select The following user:. From the User name drop-
down, select Administrator or another user that has administrator privileges. Enter
the password required to login to this account. Click OK.

Windows Vista: Select Run As Administrator.... Complete a similar set of steps, as

those listed above.

The Firefox application is started using the administrator Windows account. The user
that was used to login to Windows at startup is still the active one.

Firefox will not start after installing or updating McAfee SiteAdvisor

Firefox may fail to open after:

installing or updating the McAfee SiteAdvisor Firefox extension, or

updating McAfee software that includes the SiteAdvisor component

According to MacAfee, the problem is caused by a conflict between SiteAdvisor and
automatic proxy configuration scripts in Firefox. To fix this problem, you must start
Firefox in Safe mode and uninstall the SiteAdvisor extension.

Exit Firefox:

(Windows) From the menu at the top of the Firefox window, select File and then
select the Exit menu item.

Select the Start Menu in the Windows Taskbar. Then, select Run.

In the Run dialog, enter the following: firefox.exe -safe-mode

Click OK.

When Firefox starts in Safe Mode, select the Tools menu at the top of the Firefox
window, and select Add-ons. The Add-ons window opens.

In the Add-ons window, select the Extensions panel.

Select the SiteAdvisor extension.

Click Uninstall.

If SiteAdvisor is installed as part of a McAfee software package such as McAfee

Internet Security Suite, you can selectively remove just the SiteAdvisor component
using the McAfee uninstaller. For more information, see the documentation that
came with the MacAfee product.

Firefox will not start after installing add-ons

If Firefox previously worked but stopped after you installed extensions or themes,
you can open Firefox in Safe Mode to uninstall the extensions or themes.

Firefox previously worked

If Firefox previously worked but suddenly doesn't start, it may be due to some
corrupt data in your settings. Uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox would not fix this
problem because your settings are not removed on uninstall.

To test to see if this is the problem, use the Profile Manager to create a new profile.
If the problem goes away, you can then move your bookmarks and other important
settings into the new profile
