Layout Components:
Classroom library/reading corner with 4 6 comfortable chairs or beanbags to create a comfortable environment where students can silent independent read and build a love of reading. Bookshelves are organized by genre for easy student use. Desks arranged in fours or tables for four (ideal for collaborative group and partner work). Desks can be re-arranged into rows for testing. Several tables/desks near door can accommodate a wheelchair. Group work table in the back corner for small groups during rotations, can double as teacher desk. Computer area along one side wall with enough computers for one-third to one-fourth of the class to use if possible. End computer is wheelchair accessible. Rolling cart for overhead and computer. Five enclosed folders on left wall, each containing any homework from each day of the week, to accommodate students who have been absent. Shelf for writing notebooks from each block. Chill out chair/ study desk with a divider on top is a place for a student to calm down and return to appropriate behavior. The student cannot see much of the rest of the class or be seen, to cut down on negative attention. I will store records, curriculum and other materials, art and other supplies, rewards, etc. in the teachers cabinet and file cabinet. Environmental print: Posters of the 7 research based comprehension strategies, multidimensional fluency scale, 6+1 traits of writing, list of basic grammar rules, writing process pinwheel, a world map, classroom rules, new books and a rainbow safe zone sign. I will also have space for student work such as I Am poems, heart maps or other similar work. We will also post goals, learning targets, standards, progress reports, etc in the front of the room for each unit.
