-The Battle of Trenton took place in the December of 1776, in Trenton, New Jersey.

The Battle of Trenton


-In the beginning of the battle, the Continental army was breaking apart, leaving George Washington with no militia.

-To inspire his troops, (and more people to sign up for the Continental army,) George Washington decided to plan a nishing victory over the battle. He was going to launch a surprise attack on the Hessians, which would encourage more colonists to sign up for the militia.

-The Hessians were caught o guard from the unexpected attack, and the battle was nished in two hours. The Continental army had won.

-The battle of Princeton took place in Princeton, New Jersey, on January third, in 1777.

-General William Howe was not happy at all to see the British lose the battle of Trenton so easily. He ordered General Charles Cornwallis to attack the Continental army with his eight thousand troops. They were ordered to take the heights above town, and they succeeded.

-The armies broke into a quick battle, and it was soon over. The Continental army had triumphed once again.

-The battle of Saratoga took place on October 17th in 1777, in Saratoga, New York.

-General Burgoyne was a major general in command of the British and German forces. -General Howe was a main general in command of the British and German forces. This plan was unsuccessful because General Howe did not receive his orders in time, leaving the Continental army with only one army to ght instead of two. This battle was a signicant victory for the Americans because France nally recognized them and decided to help them

-The main British plan of attack, was going to be to have General Howe and general Burgoyne travel separately with their troops, join forces halfway there, and march together to battle the Americans with an advantage.

The Winter at Valley Forge


The Winter at Valley Forge occurred during the winter of 1778, in Valley Forge, New Jersey. Baron Von Steuben was a German ocer, and a good friend of George Washingtons. He arrived in America to train the Continental army and help them get through the winter.

General George Washington was the main general for the Continental army. He lead his 11,000 troops to Valley Forge were they would camp. Little did General Washington know, there was an extremely harsh winter waiting for them, which would be nearly impossible for them to survive. When the winter came, conditions were unbelievable. People went without shoes, there was loss of food, clothing, and it was freezing.

This time was signicant for the Continental army because the men that came out of the winter in the spring, had fully recovered and were better ghters than they were before.

The Battle of Yorktown

Yorktown started on September 28th and ended on October 19th in 1781, in Yorktown, Virginia. George Washington was the main general for the Continental army. The outcome of this battle was signicant because it lead to the signing of the Treaty of Paris. Lord Cornwallis was the main general for the British army.

One of the three key factors

that lead to the victory for the Continental army were that the British expected the French to be easy to defeat, which was a mistake. The second key factor that lead to the victory for the Continental army was that a large group of French ships arrived in America without the British knowing. The third key factor that lead to the victory for the Continental army was that the French ships set up a blockade so the British couldnt escape.

The Treaty of Paris


The Treaty of Paris was signed on September 3rd, 1783, in Paris, France. Sam Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and John Jay had begun talking of peace between America and Great Britain. They discussed this with Richard Oswarld who represented Great Britain.

One of the terms of the treaty is that Great Britain would refer to America as an independent country and respect it as it is. Another term of the treaty is that the Americans would have territory as far as the Mississippi river, and all of the British troops would be removed from the colonies. One more term of the treaty was that America agreed to pay all of the expenses The next step for Americans, as they start a new world on their own was to elect a rst leader of America/President. that they owed to Britain.

-He was born on September 30th in 1730, in a small town called Magdeburg. -He was one of the main German generals and a good friend of George Washingtons. -He arrived in America, to help the Continental army succeed in the war. He trained them to ght better during the time of the Winter at Valley Forge. -He also did not speak English! George Washington had to hire two translators, one French, and one English. -He decided to become an American citizen in 1783. He died on November 28th in 1794.
