There are a lot of safety goggles found around our facility. Sometimes you see a pair and have no clue who it belongs to. If the person misplaced it, its not that much of an issue. If the person decided not to wear it, then we have a problem. According to OSHA, by the end of todays shift, 1000 workers, on average, will have suffered an eye injury. The lucky ones will just have to deal with some cuts and bruises. The unlucky ones go blind.
It may seem like the odds are too small to actually happen to you. After all, isnt this statistic of 1000 per day just an average? Thats not how real life works--some days should have fewer accidents than others. OSHA just took a years worth of accidents and divided by 365 days. That may be true, but why should anyone discount that information? Just because its unlikely doesnt guarantee that it wont happen. And with something as irreplaceable as your vision, why take the risk? Never forget your safety goggles.
You might think that Woodshop are the only people that really need to take this seriously--maybe Chairs too--but that would be a mistake. For eye injuries, OSHA groups assemblers right along with sanders and carpenters. Even if theres nothing flying around in your work area, your eyes can still be in danger. Many injuries have been caused by objects swinging from a fixed or attached position (tree limbs, ropes, chains, or tools) that were pulled into the eye while the worker was using them. And just handling propane tanks could be dangerous: if the tank is somehow punctured, the escaping gas will also cause eye injury. (Since it was pressurized, it comes out at a very high speed.) Think of all the things that you wont be able to enjoy if you go blind: your childrens faces, your wifes smile, driving around, tv/movies, and on and on. So long as those things are important, always wear your safety goggles when at work.
Going blind means losing access to: your childrens faces, your wifes smile, driving around, tv/movies . . .
Its strange to learn that food labels lie to us. Over and over again, weve been told by the media to read food labels to make sure they dont
contain this or that. Weve been using them as tools to judge, evaluate, and decide the healthiness of our food as if they were infallible. But how can food labels be truly infallible if they rely on companies being truthful? The easiest thing to do about this problem is to use common sense. Its unlikely that the cheapest item on the shelf is magically priced lower than everything esle but still has the same qualities as everything else. The manufacturer must have sacrificed something to do that, otherwise it would be losing money. Besides that, you can also check this database: www.foodfraud.org.
