This is a picture of Chinese communist triumphing over nationalist. It is supposed to symbolize China coming to power.

Deng, Xiaoping. "China." Interview by Frank B. Gibney. China.org. N.p., n.d. Web. 10 Feb. 2013. <http://www.china.org.cn/english/features/dengxiaoping/103388.htm>. This was an interview between Deng Xiaoping and Frank B Gibney. The interview occurred in the early 1980s. I used it in order to show the Dengs ideas of the four modernizations and how he was going to attain them. Additionally, it gave me his perspective on the Gang of Four and prior Chinese rule. I used a few quotes from Deng in my website.

This magazine article was written to give current updates about China to the world. It was very unique since it was written in English but based in China. This article was published in November 1980. The article contained a general overview of the trial of the Gang of Four. Specifically, I used it to quote the four reasons for the indictment of the Gang of Four.

This was a picture taken during the Great Leap Forward. It shows the furnaces that were used out in the country to produce steel. I used it to show how times were like back then.

Khrushchev, Nikita. "Speech to 20th Congress of the C.P.S.U." Speech. 24 Feb. 1956.Maxists. Web. 8 Feb. 2013. <http://www.marxists.org/archive/khrushchev/1956/02/24.htm>. This is a speech Khrushchev gave to congress in the Soviet Union. It was delivered on February 1956. I used this in my Sino-Soviet relations section of my website. Specifically, it showed that Khrushchev denounced Stalins ideas in which Maos ideas

were rooted. It helped me show one reason for the conflict between the two countries. I quoted his denunciation of Stalin.

Li-Marcus, Moying. Snow Falling in Spring = Chun Xue : Coming of Age in China during the Cultural Revolution. New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 2008. Print. Li-Marcus wrote this book in 2008 and was a part of the Cultural Revolution. She was growing up when it occurred. The book provides a story of her life and how she escaped China in order to lead a more successful life. I used the book to show an average persons perspective of Mao Zedong. I quoted what she had to say after Mao died.

I used it in my Sino-Soviet relations tab on my website. Specifically, I used it to show the conflict between the Soviet Union and China. I quoted the part where Mao essentially calls out Khrushchev as restoring capitalism within the Soviet Union. Mao gave this speech in July of 1964. Mao, Zedong. "A Letter To The Red Guards Of Tsinghua University Middle School." Letter to The Red Guards Of Tsinghua University Middle School. 1 Aug. 1966. MS. N.p This was a letter sent to Tsinghua University Middle School by Mao Zedong. It was sent on August 1, 1966. It contained Maos full condolence for the uprising of the youth. I used in my red guards section within my website. I quoted the part where Mao says he supports the youth movement. It was delivered by Mao on September 30, 1949. I used this under my coming to power tab on my website. It contains the message that communist beat the nationalist. I quoted where Mao was telling China about the triumph of the party and how the future is going to be good.

It contained Maos speech about agriculture within China on July 31, 1955. It exemplifies Maos ideals which are very closely related to Lenin and Stalin. Specifically, I used it in my Great Leap Forward explanation. I used it to show how Mao motivated people for a revolution and his explanation of what was going to happen within the Great Leap Forward Movement. Mao Zedong's Red Guards. N.d. Photograph. This is a photo of Jiang Qing, one of the members of the Gang of Four. I used it because I quoted her near it.

This magazine article was written to give current updates about China to the world. It was very unique since it was written in English but based in China. This specific article was published in the Peking Review in September of 1966. This article gave me information on the Red Guard groups. It showed how the red guards were affecting China. Furthermore, it gave information over the four olds which I quoted.

This was a speech by Zhang Chunqiao, a member of the Gang of Four. It shows his viewpoint on China and other communist countries. I used it in my Sino-Soviet relations tab within my website. Specifically, I quoted and used him calling out Soviet rulers and saying they are capitalist. This also is another reason why China had so many problems with Soviet Russia. This was a chart that shows the Annual Income of China. It shows that rapid raise in income.

Benedict, Carol. MAO Zedong and the Cultural Revolution. N.p.: Professor Carol Benedict, n.d. Georgetown.edu. Web. 8 Feb. 2013. <http://asianstudies.georgetown.edu/files/MAO%20Zedong%20Resource%20Guide.pdf> This was a document written up by Professor Benedict Carol at Georgetown University. She has a Ph. D in East Asian Studies from Stanford University and has written a couple books over China. She provided a general overview of the Cultural Revolution. Specifically, I quoted the three reasons she states why the revolution started. This was very helpful to get an expert opinion on Maos reasons for the Cultural Revolution.

This is a chart of the US and China trading. It shows that China and the United States need each other for the trade of goods and growth of economy.

Frank Dikotter is a write for the New York Times. The article was written in December of 2010. The article contained a general overview of the Great Leap Forward and its big downfalls. Specifically, I quoted the amount of deaths the Great Leap Forward produced. This help me give people a sense of how bad it was. Fenby, Jonathan. Modern China: The Fall and Rise of a Great Power, 1850 to the Present. New York: Ecco, 2008. Print. He has edited the Observer and the South China Morning Post. He has written many books on China and is a graduate from Oxford University. His book overall covers China from 1850 to present but mainly focusing on the later years of China. This book helped me show economic effects the Cultural Revolution had which I quoted. It helped show the devastating effects a movement like the Cultural Revolution can have.

Hutchings, Graham. Modern China: A Guide to a Century of Change. Cambridge, MA: Harvard UP, 2001. Print. Hutchings has studied at the School of Oriental and African Studies and the University of London. His book was written in 2001 and explains a contemporary view of China and its history. I used this book to provide an insightful quote about the Gang of Four and what they were trying to do.

MacFarquhar, Roderick, and Michael Schoenhals. Mao's Last Revolution. Cambridge, MA: Belknap of Harvard UP, 2006. Print. This book was written in 2006 by two famous Chinese intellectuals. MacFarquhar teaches at Harvard University and Schoenhals teaches at Lund University in Sweden. Both have written many books over China. I used this book to discuss the Sino-Soviet relationship. They showed how Khrushchev revised Leninism which I quoted.

Mark, Chi-Kwan. China and the World Since 1945. New York: Routeledge, 2012. Print.

This book was written by Chi-Kwan Mark in 2012. The overall book tries to show how China has evolved since the communist country took control. I used it to show the effects that Deng Xiaoping had on China. I quoted Dengs rural system and paraphrased how the Sino-Soviet relations were normalized that he discussed. Additionally, I summarized the Chinese and American relationship that he discussed. Palmer, James. Heaven Cracks, Earth Shakes: The Tangshan Earthquake and the Death of Mao's China. New York: Basic, 2012. Print. Palmer wrote this book in 2012. The overall premise is to give primary source examples over the Cultural Revolution and the tragic earthquake that took place during it. It gave me a primary source about an average person joining a Red Guard group. Additionally, it gave me excerpts of what re guards thought and did which I quoted. Spence, Jonathan D. Mao Zedong. New York: Viking, 1999. Print. This book is a general overview of Mao Zedongs life and his accomplishments. It has very descriptive specifics detailing Maos life and also gives great examples. The author is Jonathon Spence who is a Yale professor and has written eleven books over China. He wrote it in 1999. This book helped me grasp an understanding of Maos life and how he controlled China. Additionally, it helped me understands specifics of why instated the Cultural Revolution. Wasserstrom, Jeffrey N. China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know. New York, NY: Oxford UP, 2010. Print. This book was written by Jeffery Wasserstrom in 2010. He is a history professor and has a Ph. D. from California University, Berkeley. He has written a few other books on modern China. I used this book to give insight on the Gang of Four and their arrestment. I quoted it to show how the Cultural Revolution was pinned on the Gang of Four instead of the majority of it being blamed on Mao.

Watkins, Thayer. "The Great Leap Forward Period in China, 1958-1960." The Great Leap Forward Period in China, 1958-1960. San Jose State University, n.d. Specifically, I quoted Peng Dehuais poem that was on the website. It showed the hardships during that time.

PDF. < http://afe.easia.columbia.edu/ps/cup/jiyun_industrialization.pdf> This was another DBQ provided by Columbia University. It dealt with Chinas industrialization and where it is getting its ideas from. Specifically, I used it to quote Lenin in order to show the relationship between Lenin and Maos ideas and to show how Mao wanted China to be.
