To move through the course, there are buttons on the bottom right that will move you to the next slide or back a slide, or let you return to the main menu, start over, or quit the course altogether. If you prefer to see written text instead of audio, click the text button.
There is also a course menu along the lower left side of the screen. This menu will tell you where you are within the course. Your Mission
Course Menu
The Mission: Youre a counselor and have begun working with your first client, Hannah, a single mom with three boys. She is having trouble getting her middle son to do his chores. You want to help her learn how to give him consequences. Your supervisor told you to use the technique of shaping to teach her. The information on the following pages will give you additional information about the technique of shaping. You choose what and how much information you need to help Hannah and complete your mission. When you have enough information, the Complete the Mission button on the next page will let you complete the knowledge check and finish the course. Good luck.

Shaping
Course Menu Learning in both of these cases occurs through shaping. Shaping occurs when small approximations or steps are praised to encourage successive improvements toward an end goal. Think about the small steps the baby took before they could do the final skill. Think about what parents do to encourage them along the way. This process is shaping. Start over Quit

Practice: Branch 5
Course Menu
You want to teach your dog, Jangles, to flip a light switch with her nose. You plan to use shaping to do so. First, you grab some small dog treats and a portable light switch. You lay the portable light switch on the floor and sit down with Jangles and the treats. On the next page you will need to put the steps you will take to shape Jangles behavior in the correct order by dragging and dropping them to the empty boxes on the right side of the page. When you are finished hit Submit Answer.

On the next page, put the steps in the order they should occur to teach Hannah by dragging and dropping them to the empty boxes on the right. Keep in mind that these steps would probably take place over several counseling sessions. Note: there are several correct ways to sequence the steps. When you are finished, click Submit Answer.

These are the steps in correct order: Praise Hannah for setting expectations and suggest she only give Jake one instruction. Role-play and praise Hannah for giving only one instruction.
Practice Activity
Suggest that Hannah tell Jake he will lose TV and video games if he doesnt follow her instructions.
Course Menu
Role-play and praise Hannah for telling Jake the consequence. Suggest that Hannah actually take away the TV and video game if he doesnt follow her instructions. Role-play and praise her for taking the TV and video game away. When you observe Hannah taking away the items, she is threatening him three times before taking them away. Therefore, you suggest that she refrain from giving warnings and just take them away immediately after he fails to follow her instruction. Role-play and praise her for resisting threats and warnings.

Reflection
Course Menu
If you would have developed your own steps for shaping Hannahs skill, how would you have done it? Would you have taught her in the same order as the example or would you have done it differently? Take some time to think about your answers to these questions before moving to the next screen.
