a chronic inflammatory autoimmune disorder affecting the skin and multiple body system. Two forms: discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

Risk factors: Stress or emotional upset Infections (streptococcal or viral) Exposure to sunlight or ultraviolet light

Key signs and symptoms of SLE - butterfly (malar) rash across nose and cheeks

painful or swollen joints

fever, malaise anemia die to inflammation fatigue may be due to anemia

Diagnostic test findings: LE cell preparation test: positive ANA test: positive Rheumatoid factor: positive Hematology: decreased Hb, HCT, WBCs, platelets, increased ESR Urine chemistry: proteinuria, hematuria

Medical management: Analgesics Corticosteroids NSAIDs Immunosuppressants

Nursing interventions: Provide a balanced diet. Monitor vital signs, fluid intake and output, weight, and laboratory findings. Provide rest periods as needed. Prevent infection. Reduce stress.
