Green Bay Womens Basketball Notes

Scouting Green Bay
On March 17, senior guard Rachel Porath was named a WBCA All-Region VI performer, becoming Green Bays third in five seasons to earn the prestegious honor. A first-team all-Horizon League performer this year, Porath has missed just one start in her collegiate career, making the most starts in team Division I history. For her career, Porath could move into the top 10 in all three shooting categories in team history, becoming the first player ever to do so. Joining Porath on the leagues first team is senior Lavesa Glover. Glover is the team leader in scoring (11.2 ppg) as the primary post player. A high percentage shooter, the 6-foot-3 center has demonstrated some nimble moves inside while exhibiting a good shooting touch on outside shots. Glover has more field goal and free throw attempts than anyone on the team and is second in rebounding. Senior Kati Harty, the Horizon League Tournament MVP, is in her second season as the starting point guard for the Phoenix. Quick with a knack for cutting off passing lanes, Harty is second on the team and ranked nationally in steals. Offensively, she leads the team in assists and has improved upon her career averages in field goal and three-point field goal percentages this season. Rounding out the senior quartet is forward Erin Templin. A multi-faceted player, Templin displays uncanny toughness, often taking charges and fighting for loose balls. She leads the team in rebounding and is fourth in minutes played as one of the teams most versatile players. Completing the starting five is sophomore Celeste Hoewisch, a first-year starter and second-team all-Horizon League performer. Hoewisch is a fiesty defender whos not afraid to hit the floor. She has also displayed aggressiveness on the offensive end, too. The top scoring reserve a season ago, she has scored in double figures 21 times this season and was the teams top scorer during league play. Providing starter-quality support off the bench are sophomores Kayla Tetschlag and Heather Golden. Tetschlag, who was named the leagues Sixth Player of the Year this season, has shown the versatility to play both inside and outside and is second on the team in field goal percentage. Golden gives Green Bay some scoring punch as one of the teams best shooters. Joining the second-year players as key contributors are first-year players Hannah Quilling and Julie Wojta. Quilling, a true freshman, primarily backs up Kati Harty at point guard while Wojta, who redshirted last year, has seen action in 21 games.

MACARENA (Los Del Rio, 1996)

Just as this was the dance craze years back, the Phoenix continues its march in March with its return to the Big Dance. The Phoenix has advanced to the NCAA Tournament nine times in the past 12 seasons and has made 10 trips overall. The Phoenix boasts a 2-9 record at the national tournament, notching wins in 2003 and 2007. This years contest with LSU marks the seventh time the Phoenix will face a first round opponent on their home court (Stanford, 1994; Illinois, 1998; UCLA, 1999; Old Dominion, 2000; Texas, 2002; Maryland, 2005). Green Bays No. 11 seed is fourth-best in program history. The Phoenix was a No. 8 seed in 2003, a No. 9 seed in 2007 and a No. 10 seed in 2005. Green Bay will travel just over 1,100 miles as the crow flies to participate in the first round of the 2009 NCAA Tournament.

ABOUT THAT PHOENIX

References to the Green Bay Athletics mascot or its teams should be singular in printed material. An example of correct usage: The Phoenix is on a winning streak. During the 1970 campus-wide poll which resulted in the selection of Phoenix as the University mascot, supporters suggested that the use of a collective singular nickname would emphasize the unity of the teams, University and community.

Then: GB is 27-3 Then: GB is 2-0

HOTEL CALIFORNIA (The Eagles, 1977)

Few teams have had the success Green Bay has had away from Titletown this campaign. Green Bay is 13-1 on the road this season, the lone loss coming against DePaul Dec. 29. That was Green Bays last setback of the season, resulting in a nine-game winning streak on the road heading into Sundays game at LSU. The teams 13 road victories this year is also a program best, better than its 12 wins away from home during the 2006-07 campaign.

ANOTHER BRICK IN THE WALL (Pink Floyd, 1980)

The Phoenix extended the longest current streak in the nation of consecutive regular season conference titles with a win over Loyola Feb. 21. Green Bay has won at least a share of the Horizon League 11 straight seasons, putting it just ahead of Chattanooga, which won its 10th straight Southern Conference title this season.

JOYRIDE (Roxette, 1991)

Green Bay is in the midst of a 21-game winning streak, the secondlongest in team history and tied for second-best active streak in the country. The Phoenix has outscored its opponents by an average of 19.3 points per game during the streak. Interestingly, Green Bays longest streak in team history of 26 victories in 2006-07 had a similar start as the teams current run: both teams began their winning streaks following losses to DePaul.

DESIRE (U2, 1988)

Green Bay is in its fifth week as the No. 1 scoring defense in the nation (50.2 ppg allowed). With its win over Milwaukee March 15, the Phoenix reset a team record by holding opponents under 50 points 16 times this season. In statistics released by the NCAA March 15, Green Bay was also first in the nation in turnover margin (+7.1) and fifth in steals (12.1 per game). Opponents have turned the ball over 23.0 times per game vs. Green Bay.

Previous record holder Sue Pitroski (1983-86) played in 126 games and Porath will play in her 128th game Sunday against LSU. Porath is just the third player in Green Bay womens basketball history to record 1,000 career points, pull down 500 career rebounds, and dish out 250 career assists.

EYE OF THE TIGER (Survivor, 1982)

Sophomore guard Celeste Hoewisch, a first-year starter, earned second-team allleague honors after elevating her play during the conference season, as she led the squad in scoring during Horizon League action. Not only did she leading the Phoenix in scoring (11.0 points per game) and steals (2.7 per game) during the conference slate, but Hoewisch has found her shooting groove during the teams current 21-game winning streak. During the run, Hoewisch is firing 47.7 percent from the field and 79.3 percent at the free throw line.

INDEPENDENT WOMAN (Destinys Child, 2000)

Senior forward Erin Templin showed her independence against Milwaukee March 7 when she registered the first double-double for the Phoenix this season with a careerhigh 20 points (thanks to 4-of-6 three-point shooting) and 11 rebounds. Templin then followed up with a 12-point, 10-rebound performance against Detroit March 11 for the teams only double-doubles on the year. Templin is arguably Green Bays most versatile player; last season, the 6-1 forward was third on the team in assists, while this year she is tops for the Phoenix in rebounding (5.6 rpg). She is also second on the team in blocks (19) and third on the team in steals (1.6 spg).

MAMBO #5 (Lou Bega, 1999)

First-team all-Horizon League selection Lavesa Glover leads the Phoenix this season in scoring (11.2 ppg) and blocks (23) while ranking second on the squad in rebounds (4.2 rpg). With a free throw at the 11:39 mark of the second half vs. Butler Feb. 28, Glover scored the 1,000th point of her career. Glover joined 25 other Phoenix women who have reached the milestone including teammate Rachel Porath, who scored her 1000th point earlier this season. Glover is the only player on this years roster to have scored more than 30 points in a game; Glover eclipsed the mark last season when she tallied 34 points against Wright State March 6, a mark that is fifth best in team history.

YOURE STILL THE ONE (Shania Twain, 1998)

After not receiving any postseason accolades from the Horizon League, senior Kati Harty earned the award that means the most: Horizon League Tournament MVP. Harty led the Phoenix with 12 points in the championship game, averaged 6.3 assists per game during the tournament and had a 2.7 assist/turnover ratio in three games. With nine assists March 11 against Detroit, Harty moved into ninth on Green Bays career top 10 for assists. Currently at 362 assists, Harty is five assists away from tying seventh place in team history. Shes averaging a career-best 4.2 assists per game this season. Not only proficient at giving the ball away to her teammates, Harty is 57th in the NCAA in steals, grabbing 2.4 steals per game.

NEVER GONNA GIVE YOU UP (Rick Astley, 1987)
Of course when we talk about pop culture and music, a Rick Roll needs to be addressed. At any rate, this note would be about turnovers. Green Bays turnover margin is now tops in the nation, as the Phoenix boasts a +7.16 turnover margin. Although the statistic is in its first year of being tracked by the NCAA, the margin would be the best in team history as well; the Phoenix had a +6.63 turnover margin during the 2005-06 season.

ICE, ICE, BABY (Vanilla Ice, 1990)

The Phoenix record for scoring defense in a season is 55.0 ppg set during the 1980-81 season, and this years clip of 50.2 ppg is on track to break the previous record, which would also be a Horizon League overall record (Green Bay, 55.6 in 2005). The all-time NCAA record for scoring defense in a season is 49.0 ppg, set two seasons ago by LSU. As it stands now, Green Bays 50.2 points per game allowed is fourth best in NCAA history. Green Bay is making a name for itself defensively both in the Horizon League and nationally. In league games alone, Green Bay shattered the previous record of scoring defense; the Phoenix gave up just 48.8 points per game against league foes, besting Detroits mark of 52.6 points per game during the 2004 season.

UMBRELLA (Rhianna, 2007)

Ok, now were stretching things a bit... but from beyond the three-point umbrella the Phoenix is shooting 38.2 percent on the season, with is sixth-best in the nation. Rachel Porath leads the way with a .458 shooting percentage, a clip that jumps to .482 during the teams 21-game winning streak. Green Bay has a history of three-point success, as last years squad led the NCAA with a 42.8 clip.

A THOUSAND MILES (Vanessa Carlton, 2002)

Only one time (1983) in program history have three Phoenix womens basketball players reached 1,000 career points in the same season. This season could mark the second time, but Green Bays third player has her work cut out for her. With seniors Rachel Porath and Lavesa Glover already over 1,000 points, fellow senior Kati Harty has a chance to join them. Harty is currently at 975 career points, putting her behind the eight ball to try and accomplish the feat. Shes averaging 9.3 points per game, but had a career-high 22 points vs. Butler Feb. 28.

DROP IT LIKE ITS HOT (Snoop Dogg, 2004)

As the highest scoring team in the Horizon League, Green Bays identity isnt limited just to defense. The Phoenix has shot at least 46.8 percent in nine of its last 13 games. As a result, Green Bay has moved up to eighth in the nation in field goal percentage (45.8 percent). Green Bays clip of 38.2 percent from three-point range would rank in the top 10 in team history. The squads 189 made three-pointers is also among the best in team records. The Phoenix is finding firing success at the free throw line not necessarily because of quality (the Phoenix is shooting just 69.1 percent at the line), but in quantity; Green Bays 456 made free throws is sixth best in team history. Green Bays scoring margin of +15.7 ppg is third best in team records, trailing the 2002-03 squads +18.7 ppg clip.

HOT STUFF (Donna Summer, 1979)

With its victory over Wright State Feb. 12, Green Bay posted its 10th consecutive 20-win season. Overall, the Phoenix has recorded at least 20 wins in 22 different seasons (out of 35). This season also marks the sixth 25-plus win season for Green Bay; of note, three of those efforts have been accomplished by this years senior class, including the teams program-record of 29 wins during both the 2006-07 campaign as well as this season.

STAYIN ALIVE (Bee Gees, 1978)

Green Bay has dominated the Horizon League Championship since joining the then-MCC during the 1994-95 season. The Phoenix is 36-6 in the leagues postseason tournament; Green Bay has captured nine titles along the 15-year journey. Another key to Green Bays success has been its consistency overall during the month of March, as the Phoenix boasts an impressive 77-39 record during the third month of the year for a winning percentage of .664.

WITHOUT YOU (Mariah Carey, 1994)

Sophomore guard Heather Golden returned to action March 11 against Detroit after missing four games over three weeks with a knee injury. In that game, she tallied two points on 1-of-3 shooting with a rebound. Two games later against Milwaukee March 15, Golden emphatically marked her return with a pair of baseline three-pointers during the first half. On the season, Golden is averaging 6.7 points per game in 18.2 minutes per contest as a reserve.

LOW (Flo Rida, 2008)

As it has done for every year it has competed at the NCAA Division I level, Green Bay opened the regular season on the road with a two-game series in Florida. After defeating FIU for the season opener, Green Bay improved to 12-10 in season-openers as a D-I program and 2-0 in season-opening contests under head coach Matt Bollant. The Phoenix then went on to defeat Miami (Fla.) Nov. 16 for Green Bays 700th win in program history; only 23 Division I programs have eclipsed that milestone. The Phoenix now boasts an alltime record of 727-297 for a .710 winning percentage.

TAKE ON ME (a-ha, 1985)

The Phoenix posted a team-record 27 steals in a victory over Youngstown State Feb. 5 breaking the previous team record of 25 set vs. Loyola during the 1999-2000 season. Six Green Bay players tallied at least three steals. Three players posted career highs in thefts; sophomore Heather Golden had six, senior Erin Templin had five, and freshman Hannah Quilling had four.

GIRLS JUST WANNA HAVE FUN (Cyndi Lauper, 1984)

Even with four seniors on the squad, Green Bay is one of the youngest teams in the nation based on its number of underclassmen. Ten of 14 players on the Phoenix roster are freshmen or sophomores. Only BYU (14), UMBC (13), Elon (12), Northeastern (12), UCF (12), and Tennessee (11) have more underclassmen than Green Bay. Of that list, only UCF and Tennessee join Green Bay in the NCAA tournament.

WHATS UP? (4 Non-Blondes, 1993)

Green Bay has gone to the free throw line 50 more times than any other Horizon League team. Green Bays 2009 senior class has scored 3,975 points in 490 career games. Sophomore Celeste Hoewisch, just 5-foot-7, leads Green Bay in offensive rebounds (47). Green Bays home attendance average of 2,231 is over 1,500 fans per game more than any other

team in the league.

The Phoenix is 77-39 all-time in the month of March. The team is 1-1 all-time on March 22. Green Bay is 0-1 this season on teams that made the 64-team NCAA field (loss to DePaul). Of

teams that advanced to the WNIT, Green Bay went 3-2 against the field (two wins over Butler; win at Marquette, loss vs. Wisconsin; loss vs. Illinois State).

CRAZY (Gnarls Barkley, 2006)

The 83 total points scored in the Jan. 4 Green Bay-Milwaukee game was the lowest ever in a game for each school since joining NCAA Division I. Milwaukee scored just 36 points, the fewest allowed by the Phoenix this season, and shot just 27.9%. Said Panthers coach Sandy Botham after the game: Give all the credit to Green Bay. They defensively did a number on us. Very aggressive. We just didnt respond. They exploited the areas we were weak in, which is being strong with the ball. They just took us out of what we wanted to do. We just couldnt score. All the credit goes to Green Bay and their defensive intensity. They are relentless.

BEAUTIFUL DAY (U2, 2001)

A new Kress Events Center record was established for Green Bay womens basketball when 3,719 were in attendance for a game with in-state rival Wisconsin (Dec. 10). Capacity for the Kress is 4,018. The overall attendance record for a Green Bay womens basketball game is 5,197 set two seasons ago (Dec. 13, 2006) when Green Bay and Wisconsin played at the Resch Center in Green Bay.
