Eukaryotic Cells are organisms that contain complex structures enclosed within membranes. Basic Structure:
plasma membrane glycocalyx (components external to the plasma membrane) cytoplasm (semifluid) cytoskeleton - microfilaments and microtubules presence of characteristic membrane enclosed subcellular organelles
Characteristic organelles
Cell Plasma Membrane
Barrier, transport & signalling system. Controls what goes in & out of cell
Mitochondria
Series of folds called Cristae. Contains its own DNA Functions in energy production
Ribosomes
Proteins and RNA complex responsible for protein synthesis Site of synthesis & metabolism of lipids Contains enzymes to detoxify chemicals, e.g. drugs
Golgi Apparatus
Series of stacked membranes. Vesicles move materials from RER to the golgi apparatus. Vesicles move between stacks until proteins are processed. Vesicles then carry newly formed membrane and proteins to needed destinations.
Lysosymes
Membrane bound Degrades proteins and membranes in cell Helps degrade materials ingested by cell
Peroxisomes
Centrioles
