Jessica McClendon- 19 students, 3rd grade Lesson Plan for Area Unit- Review (LESSON TO BE DONE IN COMPUTER LAB)

Common Core Standards:

MCC3.MD.5 Recognize area as an attribute of plane figures and understand concepts of area measurement.
a. A square with side length 1 unit, called a unit square, is said to have one square unit of area, and can be used to measure area. b. A plane figure which can be covered without gaps or overlaps by n unit squares is said to have an area of n square units.

MCC3.MD.6 Measure areas by counting unit squares (square cm, square m, square in, square ft, and improvised units). MCC3.MD.7 Relate area to the operations of multiplication and addition.
a. Find the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths by tiling it, and show that the area is the same as would be found by multiplying the side lengths. b. Multiply side lengths to find areas of rectangles with whole number side lengths in the context of solving real world and mathematical problems, and represent whole-number products as rectangular areas in mathematical reasoning. c. Use tiling to show in a concrete case that the area of a rectangle with whole-number side lengths a and b + c is the sum of a b and a c. Use area models to represent the distributive property in mathematical reasoning. d. Recognize area as additive. Find areas of rectilinear figures by decomposing them into non-overlapping rectangles and adding the areas of the non-overlapping parts, applying this technique to solve real world problems.

Learning Objective: * The student will be able to identify specific elements of area (following along with a rubric to complete a concept map). The student must get 6/8 points in column #2 of the rubric to demonstrate mastery of the concept. Activating Strategy: I will have the word area posted on the board. Each student will have a sticky note at his/her computer. I will ask the students to create an acrostic using the letters from the word area. After a few minutes, I will have students give me some of their words/phrases, and we will create an acrostic for area as a whole group.

Learning/Teaching Activities: Review vocabulary; discuss meanings of words and where students might encounter those words in real life situations. (Tiles in bags for students) In pairs, each student will build a figure with tiles, and then let his/her partner determine the area of the figure. 1 minute share w/ partner- How did you know how to find the area? Class discussionHow can you determine area?, How can you use multiplication?, What if the figure does not have tiles?, What if the figure is a rectilinear figure?. Do quick concept map example on boardWhat we know about dogs. Give directions for concept map activity and expectations. Show and explain rubric. Students will use Kidspiration to begin creating concept maps to show what they have learned about area. (This activity will probably have to be continued into the next day.)

Summarizer: -Have students save Kidspiration concept maps on computers. -Have students turn in acrostic sticky notes. -Ticket out- Tell me your favorite thing about area.
