Adair-Casey School Library Collection Development Policy Selection of Library Materials Statement of Policy: The Adair-Casey Board of Education

will provide a variety of library materials at varying levels of difficulty, with a diverse appeal, that present multiple points of view to meet the educational, informational, and recreational needs of students and teachers. Responsibility of Selection of Library Materials: The Adair-Casey Board of Education authorizes the professional staff of the library media center to make all decisions regarding the selection of library materials. Criteria for Selection of Library Materials: Library materials will support the goals of the school district, state, and Common Core curriculum. Library materials will support the curriculum of specific courses and the personal needs of library users. Library materials are appropriate for the subject area and the age, ability level, learning styles, and emotional and social development of the students using the materials. Library materials will represent varying viewpoints in order to present controversial materials in a fair and unbiased manner. Library materials will be evaluated on the individual merit, potential to enhance of the current collection, and popular demand. Library materials will be selected as the budget allows.

Procedures for Selecting Library Materials: The library media specialist will evaluate available resources and curriculum needs. In addition, the library media specialist will consult reputable selection tools and journals to aid in the selection of library materials. Selection tools that may be used include: Booklist Follett Titlewave Horn Book School Library Journal Voice of Youth Advocates Wilsons Core Collections Administrators, staff, students, and community members may also make recommendations. Special consideration will be given to books nominated for the Newbery Award, Caldecott Award, Coretta Scott King Award, and Iowa Association of School Librarians Book Awards.
