ENGINEERING MECHANICS 341 FLUID MECHANICS LABORATORY JET MOMENTUM 1.

. Suppose the jet of water is inclined 10o from the vertical. For the 180o deflector. (a) What effect would this have on the measured force (give the percent increase or decrease?) a. If there was a 10 degree inclination from the vertical for the spherical plate of 180 degrees then there would be a decrease of about 0.75% b. How would this affect the slope? Because of the decrease in force, there would also be a decrease in the slope of the graph. c. How would this affect the bias? By having a inclination of 10 degrees, this would have no effect on the bias whether the angle of the jet is increased or decreased. The only difference is that for both experimental and theoretical values will vary. 2. If the jockey weight is not correctly zeroed, what would you expect the bias to be? Discuss. a. If the jockey weight is not zeroed thus would have difference in the resulting bias because of the friction and gravity it would have a slight change. 3. Explain at least one additional reason for observed slope or bias errors. a. Not correctly inputting data for time that could have delays, in the process of recording data of weight, and from visual analysis of the water jet could affect our data and therefore our results providing a report that consists of a bias. 4. If your scatter was not within experimental error, give a probable cause. a. There are several reasons why this could have happened but I truly believe that because of data original placed in the tables is what can dramatically change these results from calculating both F-experimental and F-theoretical. As well as from the human error of recording time laps from a stopwatch instead of a mechanically stop circuit one the volume of water reaches the measuring point.
