Jack Robertson January 22, 2013 Childress Weekly writing 5 Part 1 Cal is the nickname for the University

of California, Berkeley. Located in Berkeley, California, Cals mascot is the Oski bear. Ranked in the top 20 universities in the United States, Cals athletics are also some of the best in the country. Cal has many sports teams including a football team, womens lacrosse team, a rugby team and a swim team. Cal just renovated their Memorial Stadium, covering it with their school colors, blue and gold. Although I know a lot about Cal because my sister was recruited there to play lacrosse, there is more about the school that I would like to know. First, who established the school and when was it founded? Why is Cal such a strong school in both academics and athletics? Lastly how many Olympic medalists has Cal produced?

Part 2 To start my research I would answer my first question who established the school and when was it founded? My first step was to look up when was UC Berkeley established. Many sources came up and I knew the best one to pick was the Schools web site because it has the most detailed records. After looking at the article I found that Cal was established on March 23, 1868 and the founders were the leaders of the newly established 31st State. Moving on to my second question about why is Cal such a good school in both academics and athletics. Throughout my research I found that Cal is a very

selective school when it comes to academics and athletics. Cal requires both academic and athletic achievement to be accepted. For example Cals womens lacrosse team recruited 7 of the top 250 lacrosse players in the nation. This type of success has lead to 32 NCAA titles. Cal has over 43,000 applicants a year; only 23% were accepted. Cal is the 5th highest school for Nobel peace prize recipients in the world. This shows how strong their teaching staff is. Also the required at least a GPA for California residents of 3.0 and for nonresidents it is 3.4 GPA. My final question was how many Olympic medalists does Cal produce? After going through many different sources I finally found a source that was reliable. The data showed that Cal is tied for second place for most Olympic medals won by students or graduates.

Part 3 I had no idea that there were so many sports at Cal and that the school is as academically challenging as it is. The number of successful people academically and athletically is amazing. I felt that my search was very successful as I had all my questions answered and more. After doing research I found that Cal is a school I might want to attend.
