Learning insights related to nursing practice

We are so grateful that we, students enrolled in NCM100, are given the chance to have an
educational fieldtrip. In this given opportunity, we have acquired a lot of learning insights related
to our chosen future profession, nursing.

In Marillac Hills, we have come to realize that to have a sound result on approaching
clients; we must be very diligent, patient and kind towards them so that they would open up more
of their experiences. We have also learned that their past experience would be a very essential
thing to understand their behaviors and to come up for a solution on their present problems. Most
of the clients in Marillac Hills are teenagers who are victims of rape and child abuse. This is a
very complicated case since their psychological behavior is greatly affected. They have
developed a trauma from the past experience. Thus, dealing with them should be with utmost
patience and kindness. They needed more love and empathy rather than pity and sympathy.

We also got a lot of learning insights in Hospicio de San Jose. The first thing that the tour
guide told us was “You were very lucky that you have complete body parts, I hope that after
touring here in Hospicio de San Jose, you would come to realize how lucky you were”. Hospicio
de San Jose is an orphanage. It is the oldest orphanage in our country. The care of staffs there
were far better than the nurses in some hospitals. Their shown care inspires us to do the same on
our future clients. Most clients in Hospicio de San Jose were mentally or physically abnormal yet
staffs there are very comfortable and caring towards them.

Besides the insights from the two previous orphanages, we have also gained a lot from
two medical hospitals that we have toured. The first hospital that we have toured was Jose Reyes
Memorial Medical Center. This hospital was like a compliment of San Lazzaro hospital since in
this hospital they are accepting clients with non-communicable diseases and on the other hand,
San Lazzaro hospital accepts clients with communicable and contagious diseases. Our insight on
this was the give and take relationship. We have realized that when life and safeguard of the
client is concerned, competition on who is better must at times be disregarded. Rather, they must
think of complimenting the lack of each other for the betterment of the client. Just like Jose
Reyes Memorial Medical Center and San Lazzaro Hospital.

Last but not the least was the realizations that we had in the mental hospital that we have
visited. First and foremost, we must be very careful and prudent on our actions and the way we
act towards them because these people are very sensitive and keen-minded as well as their
mental, emotional and psychological aspects are greatly inflicted. We must learn the proper way
on deali8ng with them so that their psychological problem will not again be triggered. The work
of psychiatric nurse, doctors and staffs in mental hospitals are patriotic because it is so difficult
to handle grown-ups with child-like behavior. These psychiatric nurse, doctors and staff inspire,
challenge and encourage us to be a psychiatric nurse sopmeday.
