Educational Philosophy

Modern day educational research provides different techniques to teach a class. The influence of school, and teacher educational values determine which strategies are implemented in the classroom. My method of teaching incorporates several of these strategies in order to create an engaging learning environment. This positive learning environment is one in which all students have the ability to retain knowledge and succeed. My teaching style stems from the constructivist view presented by James Bruner. I feel that students must learn in an interactive environment. Teaching across the curriculum and applying the spiraling curriculum method, allows for engaged and collaborative learning. Classroom collaboration allows for group learning and promotes social growth. The idea of collaborative learning allows students to explore various ideas of a topic, as opposed to taking information from a text or lecture. Students can think outside of the box with this teaching strategy and, ultimately develop higher order thinking skills. The Constructivist view, allows the teacher to become the facilitator of the classroom, by allowing students to engage in active learning. As a facilitator, the teacher is able to observe the childrens progress, or lack of progress. Informal assessment can further drive teachers instructional methods. Although I am a strong believer in the constructivist approach to teaching, I believe the teacher directed style of instruction can be used effectively in the classroom. This type of instruction should be used in moderation. Implementing styles of instruction can create a successful environment for learning and teaching. Learning must be memorable for students. Students should make personal connections with information presented in the classroom. This allows recalling the information to become faster and clearer. This applies to Jean Piagets theory of information processing. Students assimilate knowledge learned with personal memories or ideas, allowing information to be connected and organized into the long-term memory. I think this is a helpful technique to use in the classroom because it eliminates memorization and promotes active learning. My main objective in the classroom is for the children to learn as much as possible while enjoying the education system. Throughout the year, I will challenge students to their full potential. My annual goal will be to send my class on to the next grade well prepared to take on the tasks that are required. I am committed to being the type of teacher that children can learn from, respect, and trust. Students will leave my class knowing that they have gained knowledge in their studies and the world around them.
