MIDDLE CLASS SQUEEZED 8
Past budget cuts have squeezed middle class Minnesotans while big corporations and the very richest Minnesotans have kept their special tax breaks. For example, over the past decade Minnesotans have seen an 86% increase in property taxes. Over the past decade, Minnesotans have seen historic cuts to education. As a result, college tuition has doubled for Minnesota students and Minnesota has slipped from the Top 10 to 22nd in K-12 education funding.

Minnesotas deficits of the past decade have been resolved almost entirely by cuts and accounting gimmicks. Over 90% of our past deficits have been resolved with billions in cuts and billions in accounting shifts such as borrowing from schools. A decade of cuts and gimmicks havent solved our states structural deficit problem. Minnesota has faced a deficit in 8 out of the last 10 years and this year is no different. The state faces a $600 million deficit and we owe our schools over $800 million.

For decades, Minnesotas budget has been balanced unfairly by borrowing billions from Minnesota schools. The House DFL budget will pay back our schools in full, getting our state budget structurally balanced without gimmicks. A world-class education system is the gateway to a world class economy. The House DFL budget will put Minnesota kids on the path to the worlds best workforce by investing in earliest learners, increasing funding for K-12 schools, and reducing tuition for Minnesota students.

4 INVEST IN ALL STUDENTS


Middle class Minnesotans are the engine of our economy, but have been squeezed by a decade of property tax hikes and higher tuition. The House DFL budget will put more money in the pockets of middle class Minnesotans by providing overdue property tax relief. Investing in the middle class and proven job-creation strategies will position Minnesotas economy for success. The House DFL budget invests in job training, workforce development and small business strategies to grow our economy throughout the state.
