Kesha Phillips Classroom Management Plan 1. Select a Philosophical model of classroom management and discipline. When looking over the theoretical models, that relate to behavior in my classroom, I truly had a difficult time deciding what type of teacher I am and how my classroom is set up to run like a machine. A classroom should have a teacher that uses a little of each model to reach all types of students and all types of learners. However, even though that is the case, I noticed that my teaching model and personality encompasses three of the models. Those models include the behavioral model, social learning model, and the positive behavior model. The reason why I chose these models is because the details of each model. I feel that every student can be observed and molded based on their behavior, which is why I chose the behavior model. Every person, no matter the age, needs interaction with their peers and also be exposed to experiences that make them think, that is why I chose social learning as one of the models present in my classroom. Finally, I feel that positive approaches to learning are necessary for students to know they are loved outside of the home, that I am their support system at school, and that learning is great. My philosophy of education includes a belief that education, especially elementary students, is necessary for individuals to become critical thinkers and to make informed decisions. I feel that not only should I have a greater cultural understanding of the students in my classroom, but my students should as well. I decided to go in to education at a very young age because I have the desire to make a difference in childrens lives. I get immense satisfaction from helping students acquire new skills and self-confidence, and one of the strategies I use to accomplish this is by using positive reinforcement. In my classroom I want to encourage appropriate behavior, increase self-esteem,

create a positive environment, establish positive relationships, and I want to let you, as the parents and guardians, know how well your students are doing. I think one of my strengths as an educator will be that I can remain flexible while maintaining structure and showing a sense of humor while maintaining an appropriate level of authority. Students will know that I respect and care about them as individuals and know that I will go out of my way to help them succeed. I am there as guides for your students, someone they can rely on outside of the home, and someone that will help them succeed. When students leave my classroom, I want them to remember me as a truly dedicated teacher that created an interesting classroom where they were excited to come and learn. My students will have learned that they should never stop questioning areas of learning, be responsible for their own choices, and to respect themselves and others. Furthermore, I hope that all of my students leave with the solid belief that through dedication and perseverance, they can rise to any occasion.

2. Organize Physical Environment.

I chose the layout for my classroom because it is big, spacious, full of technology, and also full of books so that students can be a kid, learning in a classroom. I think that for students to become educated in technology, but to also have them fluent readers, you need to submerge them in the elements you want them to master. I also have kept the classroom size very small, for the benefit of my students to learn on a more one on one basis, however, I was realistic. So, my ideal classroom would have 24 students, ready to learn.

3. Manage Student Behavior. To every classroom there should be a positive and a negative consequence for behavior in classroom. I will have both in place, that way students know their expectations in the 4 walls of Miss Phillips classroom. The positive thing about my consequences and ideas is that it can be changed, it is not permanent, but the outcome holds the students accountable for their own learning and behavior. As a positive reinforcement I will have what is called Prince Pesos, which is my classrooms form of money. It is set up just like a money system and a classroom economy. Students will be rewarded for positive behavior and performance in class through a monetary incentive program. Classroom cash will be earned on a daily basis for such things as attendance, punctuality, and assignment completion. Conversely, students will be charged for such things as absences, tardies, hallway passes, behavior, and missing assignments. Classroom cash can be redeemed for specific privileges. For example, such things as where they sit, hallway passes, and credit toward assignments. In the end, student behavior and performance improve as they

strive to take advantage of this incentive program. Some ideas I have come up with as incentives include: Restroom Pass Free Homework Assignment Coupon Choosing your seat A 5% bonus on a test Extra time to turn in an assignment Classroom essentials like pencils and erasers In turn, as a negative consequence, I will use the money as an economic income for me. I will charge them money to go to the restroom, for pencils if they lose theirs, and when they misbehave. I do not have a specific dollar amount that I will take from them, but I would say it is based off of previous behavior, how they have acted in the class during the day or week, and how frequently they may need to service that they are asking for, like a pencil. At the end of every week I will take an allotted amount of time, preferably at the end of the day, to have the classroom store. For a small amount of money students can buy classroom essentials, a free homework pass, extra assignment time, and other things along that line. Or the students can save the money, which is also a great skill to learn for the future- No need to spend money if it is just sitting in your pocket.

4. Create Respectful, supportive learning environment. Students need an inviting and engaging atmosphere where they feel welcome and ready to learn. It is a classroom where students respect each other and their ideas. Students of all ages need to feel comfortable to answer questions, explore learning, and feel that even if they may be wrong about something, it is okay.

It is shown in many studies that students academic achievement improves in schools where students feel physically and emotionally safe and where school cultures support reasonable rules that are carefully explained and fairly enforced. A healthy learning community that is physically, emotionally and intellectually safe is the foundation for a comprehensive high-quality education. Intellectually safe environments allow students freedom to excel, focus on learning, participate in daily academic challenges, explore interests with teachers encouragement and support, and engage in activities that develop skills such as leadership and perseverance. Not only should students feel that an environment is welcoming and friendly, they also need to see that the chemistry between the staff is positive as well. So, I want to work at a school and on a team that focuses directly on collaboration with each other, as same grade and school teachers and as a classes amongst the school, because then the students feel that the school they are at and belong to is a positive place to. 5. Manage and facilitate instruction. As you can see on my floor plan for my dream classroom is very busy, but it is for good reason. It is a basic idea and concept; I want my classroom to be busy. Busy-ness of a classroom could mean advancement in learning, yes it could mean distraction for students, but I really think that if you have a lot of opportunities for students to learn, by submerging them in those opportunities, then they will get a great deal out of their education. Not only will my classroom be busy, but it will be a place where integration strategies will be facilitated throughout the curriculum. If you hook your students in the lesson then the likelihood of them actually remembering and holding on to the information is greater. The information should be engaging as well as relatable.

Although how and what you teach is important, I will need to keep in mind that my classroom will be full of diverse cultures, so I need to meet the needs of those students by becoming aware of their culture and what I can do to help them feel comfortable in the classroom. A great way to do that is for me to select materials and develop lessons that counteract stereotypes and incorporate contributions in to the classroom for all students. Most of the students that are from cultures not native to Utah are hybrid, meaning that they move around a lot, more than likely due to family or work opportunities. So because I am not sure how long I will have each student, I need them to know that the 4 walls of my classroom is a community, we all treat it as such, and it is a comfortable place to be themselves- no matter the diversities of each student in those 4 walls. As for the items in those four walls I know that technology is huge, when students are using technology as a tool or a support for communicating with others, education, and instruction, they are in an active role rather than listening to me, as the teacher, lecturing to them or just showing them that technology is good. That is why in my classroom layout I have included a smart board and a set of classroom computers, laptops more specifically. This will allow old school instruction on the white board, but still using new school methods to help all learners. Lastly, I could not run my classroom without the Big 8 and every aspect that it entails. Reward good behavior, make expectations clear, give consequences [positive and negative], give clear instructions the first time, state objectives, stop and clarify every question asked, walking around the room, and contact with students (Classroom Management, September 9, 2012). The Big 8 need to be included in all 7 hours of my teaching day that I have with the students, it is not a long time, but I can do a lot in that time with good classroom instruction and implementation of the Big 8.

6. Promote classroom safety and wellness. Safety and wellness usually refer to nutrition, cleanliness, and remaining physically healthy, which are all important things to include in a classroom. However, when I think of safety and wellness, I think of how a student feels about themselves, how they present themselves to the world, how they will contribute to society, and what they will take from the classroom as a young human. More often than not, students feel that school is not their favorite place to be, but if I can incorporate life skills which can include leadership, ethics, accountability, adaptability, personal productivity, personal responsibility, people skills, self-direction, and social responsibility, then it can be a place where they feel the most comfortable. For nutrition I will provide opportunities, for the students that may need it, one of my desk drawers to be theirs. With my permission, if they are hungry, lagging around the classroom, or just are acting like they may need something, they can always get a snack to get them through until lunch. Students shouldnt be hungry; they need to be ready to learn, so I cannot be angry with them if they cannot get a meal or if what they ate wasnt enough. I need to provide those opportunities for my students to be ready for the day, no matter their circumstances. I will also be sure to constantly use positive language to my students and not allow them to be humiliated by their work. If it is the best they can do, then it is good for me; there is no need to beat themselves up for something education based.

7. Interact with colleagues, parents, and others to achieve classroom management objectives.

As I said before, not only should students feel that an environment is welcoming and friendly, they also need to see that the chemistry between the staff is positive as well. A strong

sense of leadership among the faculty, as well as a good chemistry will provide a positive experience for the students. Students are smarter than most people give them credit for, so if they see that their teachers surrounding them, people they look up to, are not getting along, their education can be tainted and will leave a bad taste in their mouths. I will also utilize whatever parent I can get in my classroom to help out. If they need to make copies for me, take a higher level reading group, or if they are just there to watch my teaching, I am okay with it. The reason why I say that is because when a student is present in a students classroom or involved in their education, it means they care about what is going on. Most teachers, from my experience, think as some of their parents as pests are that they just do not know what is going on to judge, but if they are investing time and energy to worrying about ANYTHING, I am welcoming it. Also, if students see their parents involved in their lives they are more likely to succeed in education, even if the parent is not educated and cannot help with homework, involvement is what they need.

Conclusion I am in no way a master teacher, in fact it may take me years for me to think I am a master teacher, however, I know what I want and like in my classroom. I know it may be dreamy thinking and I may have my head in the clouds, but I think that if I work hard to really focus on my classroom and relationship with my students, it will be a dreamy classroom.
