Purpose of health screening and fitness test.

The purpose of the preparticipation health screening and risk stratification is to screen individuals for risk factors and/or symptoms of various cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic diseases, as well as conditions (physical imbalances, injuries), these include the following: Identification and referral of individuals, with medical contraindications to exercise Identification of individuals at increased risk for injury, chronic disease because of age, symptoms and physical fitness status. Identification of persons with clinically significant disease who should participate in a medically supervised exercise program. Identification of individuals with other special needs.

The body responds physiologically to stress. The heart rate rises, breathing become shallower, the immune and nervous system go on high alert, the digestive system shuts down and various hormones are released. We can improve our stress coping ability both by adapting positive stress coping behaviours (exercise, healthy diet and lifestyle) as well as by understanding the power our perception has on interpreting the events that happen to us. The screening and fitness test is one hour and the individual is furnished with a detailed report with recommendations and tailored exercise programme. The screening consists of a short questionnaire and the following: Resting Blood pressure and resting heart rate Body composition measurements (Height, weight, BMI, body fat %, Waist to hip ratio) Active measurements (Cardiorespiratory fitness, Muscular strength and endurance, Flexibility) Postural analysis and walking biomechanics.
