Generic Name:
Azithromycin

Azithromycin binds to ribosomal receptor sites of susceptible organisms. It inhibits protein synthesis.

Classification:
macrolides

Uses:
treatment of mild to moderate infections of upper respiratory tract and lower respiratory tract infections, uncomplicated skin or skin structure infections, and sexually transmitted diseases. It prevents disseminated Mycobacterium avium complex.
endodarditis prophylaxis-500mg PO q1h before procedure -adult

Usual Ranges: Adult: Pediatric:


500 mg once, them 250 mg daily for 4 days >6 MONTHS: 10 mg/kg once (max 500 mg) then 5mg/kg/day for 4 days (max 250 mg). *75lb or more receive adult dose.

diarrhea, constipation; stomach pain or upset; dizziness, tired feeling, or headache; nervous feeling, sleep problems (insomnia); vaginal itching or discharge; mild itching or skin rash; ringing in your ears, problems with hearing; or decreased sense of taste or smell.

Adverse Side Effects:


diarrhea that is watery or
bloody; chest pain, uneven heartbeats; nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); or severe skin reaction:- fever, sore throat, swelling in your face or tongue, burning in your eyes, skin pain, followed by a red or purple skin rash that spreads superinfections

Recommended Frequency of Administration: Once daily for 3-4 days Recommended Route of Administration:

Documented hypersensitivity, Cholestatic jaundice/hepatic impairment Do not administer with pimozide

NURSING CONSIDERATIONS (Before, during or after administration):


Do not take antacids that contain aluminum or magnesium within 2 hours before or after you take azithromycin taken with or without food. Take the medicine with food if it upsets your stomach. Peds take oral suspension on an empty stomach 1hr prior or 2hrs after meal. Continue therapy for full length of treatment. Doses should be evenly spaced.
