Authentic Task Letter Assignment Allison de Hoop Jan.

Dear Parents, Grandparents, Caretakers, and Guardians, As a collective project, beginning immediately, your child will be involved in the creation, production, writing, editing, etc. of a class magazine. We have been brainstorming topics on which to write/draw/experiment/perform interviews and the list goes on! The students are very excited about including you or your family in interviews, questionnaires, photos (with your consent), or other. Students will work individually, in pairs, and sometimes collaboratively in small and large groups. We will be including topics from each subject, English, Math, Social Studies, Phys. Ed., Health, and any other area your child may be interested in but our focus will be on the topics required in the Science Curriculum. Each child will have the opportunity to play different roles in the magazine editing, producing, creating process. For example, your child may be one of 4 editors for the Weather section of the magazine, and part of the photography crew for the Animals section. Students will learn decision making skills, drafting/editing skills, co-operative techniques as well as strengthen their reading and writing. Students work will be assessed as it is created. Students will have the opportunity and choice to submit and/or not submit different pages of their assigned topics and tasks to the magazine editors. Students will also be assessed in their different roles. Our plan is to have the magazine ready for the press April 16, 2012. Each child will receive a copy of our magazine to take home. We will be deciding how to fund the printing and binding costs, so be alert to future fundraisers!
