Experiment 4: Performance characteristics of an ohmic inductive and pure inductive
load
Objectives:
After performing this experiment, you will be able to:
1. Measure and interpret current and voltage ratios of a transmission line with mixed
ohmic inductive and pure inductive load.
Experiment Outcome:
At the end of the session the students should be able to:

load experiment
Procedure:
Equipment/Apparatus:
1. Assemble the circuit as shown in Figure 4.2.
2. Set the voltage on the three phase transformer to the value UN + 5%.
3. When carrying out experiments, make sure that the inductive load is not exposed to
currents which are excessively high.
4. Begin with a value of 1.2 H connected to the inductive load. The resistive load is
connected in parallel. Starting at 100%, reduce the value of the resistive load 80%, 60%,
and 40%, in that order.
5. At each step, measure the following quantities:
Voltage U1, current I1, active power P1 and reactive power Q1 at the beginning of the line,
and voltage U2, current I2, and cos 2.
Enter your measurements in the following table:

Draw a qualitative current voltage vector diagram for the case of a mixed ohmic inductive
load with a power factor of 0.8. The operating capacitance of the transmission line can be
disregarded here.

Remove the connections to the resistive load and the repeat the last measurement with L = 1H

Why does the inductive load also consume active power (cos 2 does not equal to zero)?
