Applications of Linear Algebra Description of Course: This course investigates the properties and functions of vector spaces and matrices through the lens of modern research and problem solving. Emphasis will be put on the application to real world problems that linear algebra is used for by way of the geometrical, algebraic, and computational implications of topics covered. However, pure mathematical topics, such as infinite dimensional vector spaces, will be covered as well. Course Objectives Become proficient in matrix manipulations as well as the linear algebra theory Learn to write proofs involving essential concepts in linear algebra Learn applications of linear algebra and how to apply its ideas Learn the language of linear algebra and how to communicate mathematical ideas Texts: Linear Algebra and Its Applications, 3rd edition David C. Lay Linear Algebra with Applications, 3rd edition Otto Bretscher Online Instruction by Khan Academy (https://www.khanacademy.org/math/linear-algebra/) Requirements for Evaluation: Problems sets from book, one per chapter in the Lay text through chapter 6 (additional chapters can be added if time allows). Two research projects that employ the linear algebra topics studied in real world situations such as traffic flow, computer graphics, internet search engines or other topics One project that extends work done in Physics II lab on linear algebra in electronic circuits Self evaluation Frequent Meetings with Faculty Advisor Portfolio of Work
