Dear Carla K. Johnson: Your 01/26/09 piece on thimerosal reads like a propaganda piece for the drug industry. Basic journalism requires that both sides of any dispute be presented. Your piece was decidedly one-sided. There was no quote from reputable opponents of thimerosal or a look at possible flaws in the study. You cite a mountain of evidence backing the argument that the preservative is safe but fail to indicate what percentage of studies were funded by the very drug industry that is trying to maximize its profits through thimerosal. What are the two small differences the researchers admit were shown out of 24 indicators? Wouldnt it be plain good journalism to have a scientist who is not a thimerosal cheerleader address that? Then you treat the two indicators difference as trivial by saying the might be attributable to chance. If you are auditioning for a job in public relations for the drug industry, then your piece was excellent. But as journalism, wellyour piece wasnt reporting at all. The Associated Press should review its hiring practices.
