ar e not" as Khazars, but frankly even Eastern European Jews have plenty of genetic commonality with Sephardim (the Cohen line being especially pure), there's limi ted evidence that the Khazars are one of the Lost Tribes (being a people origina lly from the Caucasus, this isn't out of the question; Abraham was clearly from the Caucasian city of Ur, for instance. I don't conflate Caucasian with European here, as some Christian Identity types foolishly do, BTW), there's debate as to how much of the Sephardic line is really Judean (perhaps lots of indigenous Spa niards converted to Judaism for perceived benefits ... but maybe these were the descendants of Phonecian settlers. There's disturbing commonality between Israel ites & Phonecians - Israel copied the Phonecian alphabet for Paleo-Hebrew, there are ambiguous OT verses that Christians consider condemnation of Phonecian enti ties but aren't so clearly cut, limited evidence suggests that Israelites visite d N. America - but only the Phonecians would have had the capacity, being skille d seafarers...). Ultimately, I see no evidence that the Pharisees were anything other than pure-b looded Jews, so this verse presumably would relate to something spiritual. What that is, I don't know, but although we would like it to mean that they aren't si ncere practicioners of any portion of the Bible, OT or NT; Prophets, Psalms, Tor ah, Epistles, Gospels, or Revelation; I have trouble accepting lots of the OT an d am honestly not sure that the criminality of the elite is altogether out of ke eping with these verses!
