April 9, 2013 To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to apply for the Mathematics Teacher position for your school. I am currently working to be highly certified to teach math at the secondary level. I believe that my education, experience in the classroom, employment background, and leadership opportunities through college would make me a valuable addition to your community. Through student teaching as well as the opportunities and work experiences I have had during my undergraduate years, I believe that I have gained skills that would be applicable to this position. I am currently student teaching and will be graduating with a Bachelor of Arts in May 2013. During my student teaching placement, I worked primarily with students in Geometry and Algebra 2; I created detailed lesson and unit plans as well as daily activities. I believe that all students can succeed in math if they are given the right tools. I want to inspire students to develop a love of learning not only in math but also in all subject areas. Through my undergraduate years, I also tutored 3 different students in various math classes and they all became stronger in their math skills as well as more confident as students. I know that my experience in and out of the classroom working with students in whole group settings as well as one on one have prepared me for continued work in the classroom. During the past two summers, I worked with the Appalachia Service Project. Their summer program brings in youth volunteers over seven weeks to eradicate substandard housing in Central Appalachia. Serving on summer staff requires dedication and motivation to working closely with community, staff, families, and volunteers. My experiences in Appalachia showed me the importance of finding areas where people find passion and motivation to learn and grow which is directly applicable to the classroom with students. During the summer I grew as a leader and developed strong organizational and management skills, I also grew in my understanding of each individuals needs by practicing patience when working with others. This patience comes from adapting and adjusting my style and plans according to the needs of each student. Working with the Appalachia Service Project was not the only experience I had which I feel has given me confidence and skills that are transferable to the classroom. Balancing classes, working on campus, leadership experiences, and serving in the community provided opportunities to practice time management and prioritizing. I hope that as a part of your schools community I would not only have a chance to impact students in the classroom but also in other roles. Enclosed is a copy of my resume with additional information about my qualifications. The experiences I have had serving students and helping them to become life long learners and active participants in the world around them have been invaluable. I have developed a continued passion to serve students, to be a part of a community of learners, and to encourage them to strive in their dreams. Sincerely,

Caitlin Closs
