English Lesson Plan Year 3 Using a Big Book (Smartest Giant in Town) Focus Theme Time Duration Topic

Content Standard Reading World of Stories 60 minutes (1 hour) Animals & Clothes 2.2 Pupils will be able to demonstrate understanding of a variety of linear and non-linear texts in the form of print and non-print materials using a range of strategies to construct meaning.

Pre-Reading (10 minutes)

Use the front and back cover of the Big Book, title and the illustration

1) The teacher shows the front cover of the Big Book and asks them. What do you think the story is about?. 2) The teacher also asks what comes to their minds when looking at the illustration at the front and back cover.

Activity 2

The teacher reads

1) Teacher can ask concept questions (simple yes or no questions) to check the students have understood the story.

(While-Reading) aloud the story to 15 minutes the students. As the teacher reads, check their understanding of each page by asking a series of concept questions

CCTS: Collecting and classifying information

Activity 3 (Post-Reading) (15 minutes)

Group Work 1) Students (be in small groups) match the animal cards and clothes cards and the beginnings and endings of each line to check how much they can remember the story.

1) The teacher gives animal and clothes cards to each group. Make sure that the cards are shuffled.

2) Students arrange the jumbled sentence strips of the events in the story, in the correct order.

1) The teacher discusses with the students what they have learnt about the story. (the summary, moral values) 2) As homework, student writes a page in Georges diary describing the day he had, by writing down the events that happened in the story. Alternatively, ask them to change the ending).

1) The teacher asks any student to summarise the story. State the moral of the story.
