Lesson: Phone Numbers Through Conversation

Teacher: Jacklin Luciano Course: Spanish 1A Department: LOTE Date: Wednesday, October 5, 2011

Mastery Objective: After this lesson, students will be able to carry on a conversation in the target language that demonstrates their ability to: 1. Greet others 2. Ask and answer the question Cul es tu nmero de telfono? (What is your phone number?) using numbers zero through ten 3. Say what day he/she will call using days of the week and the expression te llamo el (Ill call you) 4. Say goodbye Activator: Pre-assessing and Presenting Information: Match the spelled number to the appropriate picture. Procedure: After students have had time to share their responses to the activator the class will practice pronunciation of the numbers zero to ten together and then individually as the teacher selects students at random to say particular numbers. Using the SMARTboard the teacher will present the new question Cul es tu nmero de telfono? which will require students to use these numbers within a specific context. The teacher will model for students how to ask and answer the question and will use the random student generator to have several students give their numbers. The teacher will then distribute paper iPhones that will serve as manipulative for the days lesson. The teacher will direct students in the target language, to raise their iPhones and press certain numbers to demonstrate their understanding of the new vocabulary. The teacher will then ask students to put down their phones and will explain the objective and steps for the days using a clear and concise outline on SMARTnotes. In order to ensure students are clear with the objectives and prepared to begin carrying out conversations, the teacher will model with a volunteer how to carry out a short conversation using the new vocabulary. Through her demonstration, the teacher will have the student recall greetings, how to ask for and give phone numbers, and how to say goodbye. The teacher will also bring students attention to the expression te llamo el in order to include additional practice for the days of the week which were introduced earlier in the week. Once the teacher has modeled, the students will carry out conversations with three other classmates to accomplish the same objectives. Students should use the iPhone to demonstrate to their classmate that hey have understood the correct numbers and should record the number and obtain the signature on the handout titled Gua telefnica (Telephone Guide). Students will be timed during their interactions and will have approximately 3 minutes to interact with classmates. Once students are done they will return to their seats and two volunteers will demonstrate their conversations to the class.

Checking for understanding: Teacher will check for understanding through use of manipulative, monitored pair work, peer assessment and collected exit ticket. Materials:

Summary/Closure: As closure, the students will complete an exit ticket that requires them to complete a conversation (similar to the one they have had with their classmates) with the appropriate vocabulary (cloze activity). This exit ticket is to be written and collected at the end of class. Homework: 1. Create flashcards for numbers 0-11 and the question Cul es t nmero de telfono? along with its answer 2. Study all flashcards created during the week (Days of the week and Numbers)
