Course Syllabus Accessible Instructional Materials (AIM): Students with Disabilities

Joy Brown During district elementary contract hours (8:15-4:15, M-F). I am available for face-to-face discussion at your site by appointment. I can also be reached by phone at ext. 4040. Because I travel among 12 buildings in the district, email is often the fastest way to reach me (jbrown@usd232.org). I typically respond to emails in 24 hours (or less!).

Timeline:

Offered quarterly in conjunction with the current school year calendar. The course will be 9 weeks in duration. All lessons and course materials will be delivered online via the course website. (http://accessibletext.weebly.com) This course was created to support our department goal of increasing the use of AIM with students who have a print-based disability. The course is designed to provide staff with the necessary knowledge for AIM decision-making and implementation in the classroom setting. By the end of the course, case managers will be able to determine whether or not a student qualifies for AIM, and if so, will select the appropriate materials for use. The teacher will demonstrate knowledge of AIM basic information. The teacher will be able to complete the SETT framework chart. The teacher will follow the correct procedure to administer and score the PAR assessment. 4. The teacher will create an AIM trial/implementation plan for a student and will use trial data to inform accommodation decisions.

Grading:

This course will be graded as pass/fail. Upon completing and passing the course, you will earn a total of four hours of Professional Development (PD) points. This credit will be given via the districts My Learning Plan website. Typically, each lesson will include a pre-assessment, discussion thread, assignment, and post-assessment. Passing criteria for each item is located on the respective lesson page. In order to pass the course, you will need to meet the passing criteria for all lessons. Before you begin the course, you might find it helpful to consider the students on your caseload. Which students currently need materials read aloud? Could they benefit from materials that would allow them to access the curriculum independently? Try to have 2-3 students in mind as you begin the first lesson.
