Education Lesson Plan Teacher Candidate: Whitney Brown Date and Time of Lesson: March 21, 2013 School: Mathews Elem. Subject: Science L#:00169129 Grade Level: 1st Cooperating Teacher: Betsy Owings Lesson Title: Planting Seeds

Description of Lesson: The teacher engage the students at the beginning of the lesson by announcing to them they are going to plant seeds. The students will make a list using the SMARTboard of the needs they believe plants need to grow. The teacher will instruct student to pay attention to a video on the SMARTboard, The Needs of a Plant. The teacher will then have the students demonstrate by acting all of the needs plants need. The teacher will call out each need and the students will demonstrate. For example, the plant needs space so the students may move away from each other. The teacher will go over the steps the students need to take to plant grass seeds. The students will then go back to their tables. Each table will be called one by one to come to the front and receive the first step of soil. The teacher will then hand out a couple seeds to each child to place in their soil. The teacher will then call each table to bring their cup up to the front to receive a small amount of soil to cover the soil. The teacher will call each table to come to the sink and add a small amount of water. Then they will place their cup in the Tupperware container. The students will then write in their science journal what are the five basic needs for a plant to have energy and able to grow. Curriculum Standards SC Science Standard 1-2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the special characteristics and needs of plants that allow them to survive in their own distinct environments. (Life Science) Indicator: 1-2.1 Recall the basic needs of plants (including air, water, nutrients, space, and light) for energy and growth. EEDA Standard 2: Students will demonstrate decision-making, goal-setting, problem- solving, and communication skills. Indicator 2.4. make simple choices SSCA: Section 59-63-130. (A) A person may not engage in: (1) harassment, intimidation, or bulling; or (2) reprisal, retaliation, or false accusation against a victim, witness, or one with reliable information about an act of harassment, intimidation, or bullying.

Cross Curricular Connections: Students will use visual arts when illustrating the process of how a seed will grow into a plant. Also students were apart of a demonstration of theatre when acting out how a seed cannot grow without space. The students will all stand close and I will give directions how they are to act out the growth process of a plant. The students then realized they couldnt grow or spread out when they are compacted together. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: Students will recall each basic need for plants to have energy and grow in their science journals writings and illustrations. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Pre-assessment: Students will participate in a pre-discussion on how plants grow before the students watch the video. During assessment: Students will participate in a group discussion on basic needs for plants and how to plant seeds. Final assessment: A rubric of class participation and journal writing of basic needs. (attached) Materials/Resources: Computer/laptop SMARTboard Science Journals Final Assessment Sheet (attached) Pencils Water bottles Scissors Soil Grass seeds Water Water bucket Tupperware container Water pitcher YouTube Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students were taught in Kindergarten Standard K-2: The student will demonstrate an understanding of the characteristics of organisms. This standard covers the (Life Science) Indicators: K-2.1 recognizes what organisms need to stay alive (including air, water, food, and shelter) and K-2.5 Recognize that all organisms go through stages of growth and change called life cycles. Procedures: 1. Teacher will gather all students by tables at the carpet. 2. The teacher will ask the students to name what they believe the needs for plants to survive, have energy and able to grow. a. The teacher will make a list of the needs on the Smartboard. 3. The teacher will show the video The Needs of a Plant (song for kids) for 1:04. a. The students will be asked to make sure they pay close attention to what the video says are the basic five needs. 4. After the video, students will be asked to recall the five basic needs and the teacher will write them on the SMARTboard. 5. The teacher will then tell the students they will be involved in planting a seed. 6. The teacher will instruct the children to return to their desk by calling each table. 7. The teacher will call each table to the soil station to gather a small amount and return to their desk. a. Make sure you place your cup on your desk. Do not touch the soil inside. Please use two hands to avoid spelling your cups. 8. The teacher will pass out a couple seeds. a. Look at the seeds. Tell a partner what you think they look like, smell like and are going to do. 9. The teacher will illustrate the kids dropping the seeds into the cup. 10. The teacher will call each table to bring their cup to the soil station and gather another small amount of soil. Then students will return to their desk. 11. The teacher will call each child by child to the sink to water their plant . a. Students will use a water pitcher to avoid spills and accidents. 12. Then the students will place their cups into the Tupperware container and return to their desk. 13. The teacher will then instruct the children to get out their science journals. a. Please write about planting your grass. b. I expect you to include the five basic needs for the plant to have energy and grow. i. Lets go over them again. c. I want you also to draw me a picture of what you predict your grass is going to look like. 14. When finished with your writings, place your science journal on my desk. Accommodation(s): If a child is misbehaving and having a hard time following instructions, they will be asked to return their plant cups and seat at their desk. The children that finish early may read a book under their desk.
