STAD is a cooperative learning method/strategy in which small groups of learners with different levels of ability work together to accomplish a shared learning goal/used in learning factual content (e.g. vocabulary) as well as discrete skills(e.g. spelling).

Planning for Whole Group Instruction - How do you plan on delivering the lesson/topic (should be more student-focused)? What plans do you have for grabbing the interest of your students? Do you plan on using real-life examples that the students can relate to? / Teachers should be clear about his/her expectations Organizing Groups -Teachers should form diverse groups that contain students of different genders, academic abilities, ethnicities, etc. / Students gain the benefit of cooperating with a mixed culture of students in order to learn the material Planning for Team Study -#1 Rule=Learning objectives should match your assessments, therefore, whatever the teacher decides to do with his/her students must be connected with the learning objective/ What additional materials do you plan to distribute to the students... these worksheets must encourage convergent thinking Calculating Base Scores and Improvement Points -Teachers calculate students" base scores and then he/she determines ways in which their students can be awarded extra points/improvement points as a whole but be accounted for individually. These points are awarded based on how students perform on a test or quiz compared to their base scores. Make awarding of improvement points flexible (high achievers and low achievers)

Instruction -Teacher begins the whole-class discussion by directing the focus on a specific content area or skill/' He/she explains and/or models the skill until students are comfortable enough to master the skill cm their own Transition to Teams -Students should be ranked from highest ability to lowest ability so that way the teacher can group them accordingly. There should be at least one high achiever within every group. Having a high achiever on each team is like having one teacher aide for every 3-4 students being that they are placed in charge to provide help for the lower achievers. Team Study -Students work together in teams helping one another review the content while also providing necessary feedback (social skills). While working in groups, the teacher should be constantly monitoring the students' cooperation skills as well as their ability to comprise when disagreements arise. In cases where students can't come to an agreement, teachers have the right to intervene. Recognizing Achievement -Teachers could discuss with the entire class the percentages of their past grades as a whole (class %) rather than individually. The teacher then begins to explain to the students that if they aren't satisfied with their grades, there are ways in which their grades can be improved. This is where "point incentives" come about... students can take an additional quiz pertaining to the same content/skill and if that grade meets the teachers requirements, then the students have a chance of improving their overall grade.

ASSESSING Teachers should assess the students according to their base scores. She/he can evaluate the students from both their previous scores on quizzes and their current score which will allow their overall grade to increase.'-"" S MOTIVATION The students are motivated by improvement points, positive I -^ reinforcement, the ability to provide leadership skills in order to help members of their team, and also self improvement.

So what? What is important to understand about this? The Student Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD) model helps to promote collaboration and self-regulating learning skills. It also helps students improve their grades by engaging in group work and point incentives.
