McDonald TWS 2-ECED 429 Lesson Two Learning Objectives

Learning Objective: Students will demonstrate through illustrations the major structures of plants by identifying the stem, roots, leaves, flowers, fruits, and seeds. (SCSS-Science: 1-2.2) Alignment with Standards: The learning objective for lesson two is based on the South Carolina State Standards (SCSS) science. This objective is an indicator based on what students should be able to do at the conclusion of the lesson. The objective supporting SCSS-science 1-2.2 allows students to demonstrate their learning. Students are able to show what they have learned through illustrations. My goal for this lesson is to have students demonstrate an understanding of the parts of a plant. Appropriateness: Developmentally, this is an appropriate learning objective for first grade students because this is the first time that students have been introduced to the structures of plants. Students will take this information and expand their knowledge of plant structure in 3rd grade (3-2). In 6th grade (6-2), the student will study the structures, processes, and responses of plants that allow them to survive and reproduce (South Carolina State Standards Support Document Science). Students in first grade are familiar with labeling and listing parts of a structure. Considering pre-assessment results, it was clear that my students could identify a plant or flower. Majority of the students were able to name a few parts of the plant. Student will be encouraged based on their prior knowledge but also challenged and engaged because of the learning they will be experiencing.
