An Exploration into Performing Animal Rights A. Abstract

As a senior in the Legal Studies Academy I have a clear understanding of animals being abused. Some because they are trying to train the animals and there is no source of positive reinforcement for those type of people. For my senior project I plan on conducting a fundraiser, "A Doggie Social". During this social there will be many dogs coming together at a dog park. The dog park is PETAs dog park located at 501 Front St., Norfolk, VA 23510. It will be on a Saturday in mid- March. There will be dogs playing with each other. There will be doggie ice cream, and a percentage of the ice cream bought will go to the fund. I will have pet stores donate items and I will raffle them off. I will have a donation spot where people can donate old dog beds, bowls, blankets or even toys that they are not using. There will be tents there for people that have dog items they would like to sell and a charge a fee to set their tables and tents up to sell their items. I will also have a tent for K9 Justice League where they may have pictures of the dogs that need homes and they may have some dogs there that could be taken home there and then. My consultant is Chris Livengood. She volunteered at the therapeutic riding program since 1999. During that she provided care to horses, rabbits, cats and more. My audience will be any dog lovers or anyone that sees the advertisement and it speaks to them. My project will take place at a dog park. Over 40 people will participate in this project but over hundreds of dogs will benefit from this. All the money raised will be donated to the K9 Justice League where they find homes for the dogs and they need money to feed and house these animals. The donated items will go to the dogs that are in need of a home and they go along with them when they go to their new home. I will need lots of materials. I will need a place in which to hold the event. The admission into the park is free to appeal to a bigger audience. Not everyone is going to spend money and thats why it appeals to many people its just donations and raffles. I will need to put ads up to advertise my doggie social. I will need to see if there are people willing to set up their tents and sell whatever items they do pertaining to dogs. I will need to make little cards so when people walk out they have something to remember. I will need jars in which will have pictures of

animals and people can put money on their jar and that provides them more food and beds and etc. When people are leaving the park I will give them a sheet of paper reviewing the event. It will ask questions that pertain to how organized, how you would rate the event overall. The survey will give me an overview of how the event went, and what the people took away from the event. My client is the K9 Justice League they have been running for over 5 years and they are a non-profit organizations that needs to get their name out there so more people can provide homes for these dogs that have been abused or abandoned or etc. They need money to provide for these dogs and continue to keep it running. There will be posters and ads all over so the people coming to the park know that any money donated is greatly appreciated and can be put to great use at the K9 Justice League. B. Learning Skills

The biggest obstacle I see for myself having to overcome will be my time management skills. I will need to learn how to prioritize tasks and manage my time more efficiently. In addition I will need to keep organized and stay on track. I will have to learn how to get someone to compromise with me to raise money. I will have to go outside of my comfort zone to succeed at this task.

Total D. Documentation

For my project, I will take pictures at the event. I will have a sign in sheet. There will be many different people there that will write down a letter in which shows they were there and recognize there were 40 people there. In addition I will keep a time log for my senior project. Every phone call or meeting that was made between me and my consultant will be recorded and they will sign off on it. I will have as many evaluation sheets handed out so I can get feedback on how the event was. The format for receiving this data will be a survey. Finally, I will keep a journal of my progress. At the conclusion of my project, I will upload all relevant documentation onto my Weebly for judges to see.

Project Justification

As a senior in the Legal Studies Academy I am familiar with what animal abuse is. Therefore, I feel as if I have the responsibility to share my knowledge with others. This

project is designed in a way for me to use all of my abilities to their greatest potential. However, I will be challenged. I will have to conduct a fundraiser in which I raise awareness and money. In addition I will try my best to make this event be well known and raise enough money to keep K9 Justice League finding homes for animals. This project will make me step out of my comfort zone. F. Project-Paper Connection

For my paper I explored the rights of performing animals by defining animal abuse in different viewpoints, reviewing laws that protect performing animals, and discussing cases in which laws were not being enforced. In my fundraiser I found an organization that takes in animals that have either been abused or abandoned and etc. They are finding houses for these dogs and providing a safe place for them to live. I am having a social in which raises money for this non-profit organization to continue to run it and continue to provide a safe place for animals to live. In my paper I was reviewing animal abuse and this organization takes in victims of animal abuse and I want to donate my time and money to show awareness of this. G. Academic Honesty

I understand that the project has to be my own work. I know that if I fail to use proper citations on work that is not originally mine, I will be accused of plagiarism. If proved I was at the wrong I hold the possibility of being sent to my home school, Salem High School. I understand that any academic dishonesty by me on any part of the project will result in failure of the Senior Project and forfeiture of the Legal Studies Seal on my High School diploma. H.
