Lesson Plan Title: Exploring the 5 senses Date: November 14, 2012 Subject: Science Number of Days Covered: 1 Grade Level: K-1

Standards Addressed: Standards: Physical Science Benchmark: Explore and Understand our five senses Specific Observable/ Measurable Learning Objectives: Identify how they see, hear, smell, taste and touch Complete the class assignment that helps students identify what senses are being used in the picture. Connections: Whenever students do anything they will realize how much they use their 5 senses and how much they may have used them in the past Required Materials for this lesson: Book- My Five Senses by Aliki Construction Paper Pictures Glue Sticks Students Background/ Prior Knowledge/ Experience: Put a poem on the board to see what students recognize on the board in the poem Underline the keywords and ask them what they recognize on the board and how they use them See what students already know about the five senses Main Ideas: How we use our senses everyday What body parts we use to manipulate our 5 senses What do we do when we use our five senses Key Vocabulary: Taste Smell Touch Hear See

Motivational Strategy/ Anticipatory Set for Lesson: Every time the students hear the keywords they point to where the sense is used For example when I say taste students point to mouth, I say touch students raise their hands, I say smell students point to nose, I say hear students point to their ears Introduction, Body Conclusion: 1 Put the objectives on the board as well as the poem that I am going to use for my motivational strategy 2 Make a chart on the board with each sense having its own column and then I am going have students give me a list a things that can go under each such as food under taste. 3 After students finish this class work students will get into groups and identify the senses being used in each picture. 4 Each group will tell exactly why each sense is being used and how they know this from looking at the picture. 5 Students will listen to a poem and then at the end show comprehension by listening for the sentence and keywords and explaining what each sense does in the poem. Differentiated Instructional Support: Manipulatives so that students can touch Visuals so that students can actually see what the five senses are Homework or Home Connections: Students will go home and make a list of the senses that they use and what they used it for Student Assessment: Students will be able to create their own poem with their own sentences on how they use their senses Reflections/ Self Evaluation:
