English II Perspectives in Literature (Although 10th grade English is typically World Literature, the 10th grade textbook I selected contained mainly American/British literature). 3. Assume you were hired for New Hanover County Schools this past year. a. How many grading periods do you have? 2 b. How many instructional days per grading period? 41, 42 (not counting days taken for testing) c. How many days will reserved for teacher work days and testing? 5 5. Curriculum Mapping What the students have been expected to learn during their past school years? The students have been expected to learn basic skills for interpreting and analyzing literature, as well as comprehending nonfiction texts and strengthening vocabulary acquisition through use of context clues. They are also expected to understand how to write essays, informational texts, and narratives appropriate to the purpose and audience of the text, using the standard conventions of English. What the students are to learn during the present school year?

The students should master the Standards introduced in 9th grade. Students must strengthen skills in interpreting and analyzing literature and nonfiction texts of greater complexity, including analyzing the structure of a text, as well as the authors intention and purpose. When writing, students must be able to write complex arguments, convey information clearly and concisely, and write narratives with effective technique. Students should also be able to command the standard conventions of English when speaking and writing. What they are going to be required to learn in future grades? In grades 11 and 12, the students will expand upon the skills that they mastered during ninth and tenth grade, especially research skills. There will also be a greater emphasis upon connecting literature with its historical context, and Shakespeare is required study.
