Walter Ottaway Artifact H Program Competency: Integration of Technology

Reflection Realizing that technology is becoming more and more relevant to everyones life, I feel that it is important to give students the opportunity to grow through technology. By using technology in the classroom, I am better preparing my students academically, as well as, providing a skill set for use in real world applications. The attached photo shows a student using the computer to research as science project. The class is approximately half way through the science matter unit and as part of their learning experience, I assigned a Create Your Own Superhero project. The students were given three class periods to complete the three parts of the project. Part 1 consisted of the research phase, part 2 was the design phase, and part 3 was the poster phase. During part 1, I instructed the students to utilize laptops to research an element in which they wish their superhero to use. The students were required to find and list an elements name, atomic symbol, atomic number, atomic weight, number of protons, number of electrons, number of neutrons, date discovered, who discovered, and real world uses. Students were given access to the following websites to facilitate research. Jefferson Labhttp://education.jlab.org/itselemental/ Chem4kids http://www.chem4kids.com/index.html

Overall, my lesson was very successful. The students appeared to enjoy using laptops to research their superheros element. Further, the students enjoyed the freedom to use their imagination during the design phase of the project. Throughout the three class periods, students

were eager to share their research and the unique powers of their superhero. Based on the students research and their enthusiasm during the project, I will definitely use this assignment in the future.
