One may say that the british were wrong for colonizing the Ibo. But another person could also agree that even though the british came and took over the Ibo culture, in the long run, it will turn out for the best. The British brought new technology, religion, and different moral ideas to the Ibo people. The traditional technology that the Ibo people had was very basic compared to that of the British. One of the things that the British brought to the Ibo people is what they call the iron horse, or simply, the bicycle. The introduction of the bicycle was so astonishing to the Ibo people that they British tried to even bribe them with it. On page 147, the white man tells the people of Umuofia that I shall bring more iron horses when we have settled among them. Some will even ride an iron horse themselves. This quote shows the white man trying to bribe the people in Umuofia to let the british come and take over their village. With this new technology, the British also brought other new economies to the Ibo people which will affect their entire way of life. Another thing that the british brought to the Ibo culture is a brand new religion that the traditional Ibo people are unfamiliar with, and thats Christianity. With the introduction of Christianity, the Ibo people were confused and stunned by the morals and beliefs that the Christians lived by. An examples of this is shown when the church in Umuofia began to accept people that the Ibo had normally exiled to the evil forest into their care. Normally when twins were born, the Ibo people believed that they were evil and threw them into the evil forest. But when the british came inm they accepted the twins into their care. The Ibo people were so astonished and outraged by this and the fact that the Christians did not care about Ibo culture that they outlawed women and Efulefu from coming back into the villages. This act of aggressing shows that while the british thought they were making things better for the Ibo people, they in face were just making life for the Ibos harder. In conclusion, the British felt that they were helping the Ibo people by modernizing them when one can argue they were just making life harder.
