Agendas for Week ONE of TWO weeks for Project Based Unit

Monday (04/08)
Topic: Graphing Method Benchmark MA.912.A.3.14, MA.912.A.3.15 Objective(s): SWBAT - Solve systems of linear equations using graphing. - identify the point of intersection. Engage Warm-up activity graph two equations, what do you notice? Warm-up class discussion about what happens when a teacher is absent. Explore Dive into the warmupstudents noticed the graphs intersect; at what point? Does that point satisfy the equations? Give students the worksheet titled Exploring Systems of Equations. This worksheet asks questions that lead up to using the substitution method (scaffolds). Explain Smart board notes and practice problems on Use the smart board to present notes and Use the smart board to present notes and Use the smart board to present notes and Warm-up Students are to create their own systems of linear equations given a solution. Give students the worksheet titled Make it Zero. This worksheet has students practice multiplying terms in order to eliminate them. Give students the worksheet titled Same slope or different slope? This worksheet has students identify whether the systems slopes are the same or different. Warm-up quiz on the material from the past 3 days. Students are exploring the AT&T store, gathering information to create their own cell-phone plans based on data from the realworld.

Type of Lesson:

N/A

using the graphing method for solving linear equations.

practice problems on using the substitution method for solving linear equations.

practice problems on using the addition (elimination/combination) method for solving linear equations.

practice problems on special types of linear systems

Elaborate

Give students 2 sets of linear equations. Ask students to graph the equations on the same coordinate plane and identify the point of intersection. Students must check their results.

After learning the main concepts associated with the substitution method, have students apply the concepts to practice problems. There are 3 problems.

After learning the main concepts associated with the combination method, have students apply the concepts to practice problems. There are 3 problems.

Give students 3 sets of linear equations. Ask students to identify the slopes of the equations. Are they the same or different? Do the systems have no solution, one solution, or infinitely many solutions?

Evaluate

Exit ticket: describe in your own words how to solve a system of linear equations using the graphing method.

Give students an exit ticket. The exit ticket states: Describe in your own words how to solve a system of linear equations using substitution.

Give students an exit ticket. The exit ticket states: Solve the following system of equations using the addition method.

Give students an exit ticket. The exit ticket states: How do we know if a system of equations has infinitely many solutions? Provide an example.

Topic: Type of Lesson: Using Matrices Benchmark MA.912.A.3.14, MA.912.A.3.15 Objective(s): SWBAT - Write systems of equations as augmented matrices. - Solve systems of equations by using elementary row operations. Engage Warm-up Activity students will solve three systems of linear equations using the graphing method, the substitution method, and the addition method. Explore Students are grouped in pairs and are given a set of cards. Each card contains either a matrix or a system of linear equations. Students are to match the system Review some of the main concepts from the video. Warm-up Activity students will watch a break-even analysis video on YouTube. http://youtu.be/Du07z79TJs

with the matrix. Discuss the results as a group. Explain Take notes and do practice problems on the smart board. Go into more detail on break- even analysis, using example problems.

Elaborate

Give students two systems of equations in which they must solve using the augmented matrix method.

Give students two breakeven problems. Students are required to write the cost function, write the revenue function, and determine the break-even point. Once they have complete those three tasks, students need to describe what the break-even point means in regards to the problem.

Evaluate

Give students an exit ticket stating: what information from todays lesson are you unsure about or would like further clarification on?

Give students an exit ticket that states: what is total costs, revenue, the breakeven point, and profit?
