Topcon and Komatsu strike deal
Topcon and Komatsu are gearing up
their long running partnership to a new
level, and which will be implemented
on a global basis.
Although the frms have been co-
operating internationally for some years, this
partnership has been particularly active in
the European market for machine control
technology. Under the terms of the deal,
customers will be able to order Komatsu
machines that are factory-ftted with Topcon
technology.
Sensors will be ftted in the hydraulic rams
of bulldozers, graders and excavators for
instance, which will allow far greater degrees
of accuracy and durability than by using
equipment mounted on masts. Achiel Sturm
said, Well be able to connect excavators to
the dump trucks working together and be
able to gather data in the workplace based
out of a central hub. The way ahead in the
future will be to communicate with all
machines from all companies using common
architecture. He added that this would not
be limited to machines from Komatsu either
and would encompass equipment from other
manufacturers that Topcon works closely
with, such as Liebherr and Volvo or others.
This deal is of note as it follows on from
Topcons recent agreement with software
specialist Autodesk to improve the
interoperability of their respective
technologies and products. Under this
agreement, Topcon and Autodesk are now
working together to integrate aspects of their
services and solutions. The aim is for
Autodesks design and construction software
portfolio for Building Information Modeling
(BIM) to better interact with Topcons on-site
feld positioning hardware. The initial phase
focuses on API-level integration between
Autodesks AutoCAD WS product and
Topcons systems. There will be further
exploration of potential combined offerings
both on the desktop with Autodesks design
solutions (including AutoCAD, Revit, and
Navisworks) and in the cloud with
Autodesks BIM 360 offerings, including BIM
360 Glue and BIM 360 Field. These solutions
are intended to directly connect and drive
Topcon feld positioning hardware for
installation layout tasks, as well as as-built
collection and documentation.

Volvo strengthens German distribution
Volvo Construction Equipment
(Volvo CE) has divested its
wholly-owned dealership in
south-east Germany, Volvo
Baumaschinen Bayern (VBB), to
neighbouring distribution partner
Robert Aebi.
The deal, for an undisclosed
sum, includes the transfer of the
company including all assets,
employees and sales territory.
The distribution in the south of
the country, with Robert Aebi,
now consists of a well-financed,
independent and strategically
aligned partner and this latest
move strengthens
Volvo CEs competitive
position in Europes largest
market, and heralds exciting
possibilities for an improved
customer experience, as well
as operational synergies and
economies of scale, says the
company.
The synergy effects brought
by combining Robert Aebis and
VBBs territories will allow Robert
Aebi to enjoy economies of scale
in its operations, strategically
invest for the long term and
gain greater market penetration
and share, says Tomas Kuta,
president of Volvo CEs EMEA
(Europe, Middle East and Africa)
sales region .
Robert Aebis CEO Marcel
Zahner said: We are extremely
ambitious and have clear plans
for growth. The acquisition
strengthens our position in
Germany and, with a newly
expanded territory the deal gives
us the potential to double our
machine sales in Germany in the
coming years.
This latest move is consistent
with our plans to position

HCMEs new customer-led loader
Hitachi Construction
Machinery (Europe) (HCME)
says its new ZW250-5
wheeled loader being
unveiled at bauma is the
result of feedback from
European customers.
The models cab is said to be
more spacious than models
from the previous range,
because the heated air-
suspension seat can slide
further back, providing more leg
room. The tilting telescopic
pop-up steering column has
also been repositioned to create
additional space.
An air conditioning system
has been installed that
regulates the temperature
inside the cab, and an optional
flter is available for industrial
waste job sites. Sound
insulation reduces noise levels
from the local environment.
While the ZW250-5 wheeled
loader complies with EU
regulations on emission
standards, HCME said it does
not compromise on
productivity. It has an 181kW
7.8litre six-cylinder water-
cooled turbo engine, and what
HCME describes as impressive
travel speeds and excellent fuel
consumption.
The new 20.25-20.7tonne
operating weight wheeled
loader is also said to be easier
to manoeuvre than the previous
model. This is also said to result
in higher levels of productivity.
The ZW250-5 has two simple
work modes that provide an
appropriate level of
performance for a particular
task. In Standard mode, the
engine speed is controlled,
which allows for smooth and
effcient acceleration during
loading, regular operations and
travelling on level terrain. Fuel
consumption is claimed to be
reduced by up to 10%,
enhancing its environmentally
friendly performance.
A new clutch cut-off system
allows for smooth operation
when it is loading. Furthermore,
the ZW250-5 has a quick power
switch, an example of its
advanced technology, which
boosts the power when
required by changing work
modes. To enhance safety on
the job site the ZW250-5, which
has a 2.8-3.8m bucket capacity
and 157kN breakout force,
offers greater visibility from the
operators seat than previous
models thanks to a pillar-less
windshield and large sun visor.
The counterweight is also now
visible from both sides of the
machine.
The shift-up delay to third
gear makes the wheeled loader
safer to operate in confned
spaces, because it can perform
excavating and unloading tasks
more safely in frst and second
gear.

Bells new E-series ADTs
Bell Equipment is now
adding the new B25E and
B30E ADTs to its range,
seen frst in prototype form
at the Intermat show in
Paris in 2012.
Marc Schrmann, managing
director of Bell Equipment
Europe, said, There are several
improvements over the D series.
The A frame design from the
larger trucks is now being used
in the smaller trucks. There is
more suspension travel and this
gives more comfort and allows
higher travel speeds.
He added that the increased
travel speed is of particular
beneft when the trucks are
empty and are returning to the
loading point, as it means they
can be driven faster and reduce
overall cycle times, with a
beneft to productivity. The load
capacity has been increased
slightly for both machines, with
the B25E able to carry 24tonnes
in its 15m
3
dump body and the
B30E able to carry 28tonnes in
its 17.5m
3
dump body.
The Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB
compliant Mercedes diesels are
rated at 210kW for the B25E
and 240kW for the B30E and
feature selective catalytic
reduction (SCR) technology to
help reduce emissions, and
which also helps lower fuel
consumption. The transmissions
for the B25E and B30E have
been changed to Allison
systems, as used in the larger
trucks from the frm.
Schrmann said, We wanted to
go to a common family across
the range.
Other improvements
include more up to date cab
isolation, further improving
operator comfort, and a larger
screen display.

Hamm continues to develop its
sophisticated soil compactor range
with the addition of models aimed at
the 11-16tonne weight classes.
These are powered by Tier 4 Interim/
Stage IIIB compliant diesels and share the
same design concept as well as features and
many components with the existing
18-15tonne rollers. The high compaction
performance and unobstructed sight lines
from the cab of the larger machines have
also been carried over into the smaller units.
The H11i, H13i and H16i compactors have
2.14m wide drums, compete in the 11tonne,
13tonne, and 16tonne classes respectively
and are all powered by four cylinder Deutz
diesels rated at 105kW, with suffcient
cooling allowing operation in ambient
temperatures as high as 50C. The
sophisticated combustion technology
includes an after-treatment system with DPF
flter to reduce particulate matter. High
manoeuvrability is claimed as well as good
stability on uneven or sloping terrain, while
the machines are available with smooth
drum and padfoot segments, or padfoot
drum. The 13tonne machine is also available
with a VIO drum, capable of compacting
with either vibration or oscillation. Standard
equipment includes the Hammtronic
machine management system, which
optimises traction and vibration drive while
reducing fuel consumption. A new feature is
the optional telematics interface.
This can transfer data for feet
management purposes and can also be used
for remote diagnostics or as an anti-theft
protection. Customers can also opt for the
HCQ Navigator, which is available as a
factory-ftted option. This system enables
precise and even compaction as well as
comprehensive compaction control. A new
HCQ function also enables simple data
export in conformity with American analysis
software.
As with the large compactors of the H
series, all service points and batteries are
also located on one side of the smaller
models. The innovative air flter is said to be
simple to clean and replace.

New mid-size Doosan loaders
High performance and
productivity are claimed for
the new generation DL200-3
and DL250-3 wheeled
loaders from Doosan
Infracore.
Powerful engines and a
number of new features help
reduce fuel consumption while
these machines are also said to
be easier to service and offer
extended durability.
The new cab design provides
better visibility and more leg
room, while it has a new
instrument panel with an
integrated VCU (vehicle control
unit). The DL200-3 and DL250-3
are both powered by the Doosan
DL06K, a common rail, six
cylinder diesel that meets Stage
IIIB/Tier 4 Interim emissions
regulations. This has been
achieved through the use of
exhaust gas recirculation (EGR)
and diesel particulate flter (DPF)
after-treatment technologies.
The operator has a choice of
three workingmodes - Eco,
Normal and Power. The operator
can travel in Normal mode and
switch to Power mode when it is
needed and can also set a
password for machine start.
Load-sensing, variable hydraulic
piston pumps help optimise
performance and further
reduce fuel consumption.
As an option, customers can
choose ZF axles with a hydraulic
differential lock. This function is
engaged via the operator pedal
or in automatic mode,
depending on the torque
resistance in frst and second
gear. The hydraulic lock system
offers less rolling resistance than

Boppard-based BOMAG is
unveiling its new 5-8tonne
class soil compactors, which
are said to offer increased
performance and lower
running costs.
Compact, manoeuvrable and
economical, the BW145 and
BW177 machines are said to be
highly productive and suited to
use on small to medium size
projects. High performance is
claimed for compaction,
gradeability and effciency. Judith
Rheingans of the frm said, The
operator platform has been
redesigned to give better
visibility and access. The
operator can see the drum
better.
A key point is the upgrade to
the vibration system, which is
said to reduce the risk of drum
bounce. In addition, the
machines have a sophisticated
automatic amplitude control,
BOMAG VARIOCONTROL, which
is said to make the compactors
more suited to compaction
duties in sensitive areas.
Fuel economy from the new
Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB engines
has been improved by up to
30%, with help from an
integrated ECOMODE function
that allows the machine to
match engine speed to work
load intensity. An engine stop
function also switches off the
engine after a preset idle period,
further reducing fuel
consumption.
Another improvement in
effciency comes from the new
dual circuit drive system, which
features twin pumps for the
front and rear axle that improve
traction.
These new BOMAG single
drum rollers can tackle up to
56% gradients forwards or
backwards. Ergonomics in the
cab have been improved also,
along with better visibility.

its three new M Series
dozers being introduced at
bauma the 1150M, 1650M
and 2050M offer a 10.5%
fuel saving, and 19%
increase in productivity,
compared to the previous
generation of machines, due
to their claimed best-in-
class engine reaction.
They have operating weights
from 13-20tonnes. Like other M
Series models, the three new
dozers are powered by fuel-
effcient, Tier 4 Interim FPT
engines, using a proven
Selective Catalytic Reduction
(SCR) technology.
The 1150M and 2050M with
their new SCR engine beneft
from a 9% power increase, to
100kW and 168kW respectively,
while the engine in the 1650M
develops 16% more power, at
120kW. This increased power
output is said by Case CE to
allow the engines to run with
fewer rpm while developing
increased torque, providing a
boost in drawbar pull and
pushing effort.
The M Series dozers use
highly-effcient hydrostatic
transmissions to deliver a
claimed class-leading drawbar
pull, of 213.5kN for the 1150M,
311kN for the 1650M, and 374kN
for the 2050M. With a completely
revised transmission layout, the
dozers are said to beneft from
improved oil cooling, particularly
useful in hotter climates, yet
deliver a constant power
transfer under load.
The cab has been positioned
100mm further forward on the

Hyundai unveils 9A series at bauma
Like its fellow new 9A series hydraulic excavators
with engines above 130kW, the engine on the Robex
R380NLC-9A hydraulic crawler excavator from Hyundai
Heavy Industries (HI) comes with an EGR and diesel
particulate filter (DPF).
The DPF is said to be automatically or manually
regenerated, ensuring compliance with all NOx and PM
values. According to Hyundai HI, DPF filters only need
to be cleaned after 5,000 to 6,000 hours in operation.
The R380NLC-9A, like all 9A series machines,
complies with strict Tier 4 Interim/EU-Stage IIIB
standards on engine emissions.
Meanwhile, the joystick consoles and operators
seat in the R380NLC-9A and the other new 9A series
hydraulic excavators are said by Hyundai HI to form
an ergonometric unit, no longer requiring separate
fittings. The South Korean firm hopes that operators
will benefit from the machines smart key and in-cab
touch displays. In addition, the engines can also be
turned on with a start button and activated at any time
with a password. The in-cab display is said to be large
and can be moved to the best ergonomic position and
allows the operator to select working modes quickly.
Hyundai HI said it gives an overview of all fuel levels
and information on any errors in clear text.
A Bluetooth mobile phone connection is also
available with the new 9A series hydraulic excavators
for the first time. This is said to make it possible for the
operator to communicate with colleagues outside the
excavator using the optional hands-free device, a feature
claimed to be in high demand for civil excavation and
trenching work.
The maintenance intervals for the new 9A generation
of machines have been increased to 500 hours for all
components and 1,000 hours for hydraulic filters. The

Described as a game-
changer by Gary
Stampanato, vice president
of Caterpillars excavation
division, the Cat 336E H
hybrid excavator will be
offcially launched at the
bauma show.
Using new hydraulic
technology developed by Cat,
the hybrid machine is said to
deliver uncompromised
performance, durability and
reliability.
Cat claims the 336E H
delivers industry-leading
productivity, with up to 50%
greater fuel effciency over the
336D. It is also said to use up
25% less fuel than a standard
336E, and up to 33% less fuel
than the 330/336D.
As the 336E H burns less fuel
and reduces regulated engine
emissions, owning and
deployment costs are said to be
much lower than a standard
machine, and its carbon
footprint will also be smaller.
Based on high-production
levels and current fuel prices,
Cat estimates that customers
can expect to see a return on
their investment in a 336E H
machine after just one year.
Cat says that, like a standard
machine, 336E H components
can be replaced or rebuilt to
maximise the hybrids service life.
Meanwhile, customer

MOBA is now offering a sophisticated excavator
control package that has been developed in
partnership with Finnish firm Novatron. The
package has been developed along modular
lines and the firms marketing manager Christine
Seidel said, Once the sensors are installed in
the excavator you can start off with the low cost
system and upgrad it later.
The basic package is a 2D system while a
sophisticated 3D version with full function options
is available. The simple Xsite EASY package can
measure excavation depth, incline and range
and displays all current values on the display
in the vehicle cab. Using these parameters, the
operator can control the bucket and accurately
create the desired profile even on construction
sites with limited visibility. The height monitor
increases safety at the construction site, as the
system warns the operator of impending contact
with overhead lines. Its all sealed so you can
also use it underwater, Seidel said. For more
complex tasks the Xsite PRO package offers a
wide range of 3D duties. Project data can be
transmitted from the office to the system through
the internet connection and the system can use
all common data formats. The GNSS positioning
data is collected automatically and, using a digital
3D terrain model, work can be monitored closely
on the touch-screen panel. For positioning the
machine, Xsite PRO only requires one GNSS
sensor, while two GNSS sensors will provide

Vgeles new screeds
In addition to its new paving
range, Vgele is offering
improved screed technology
for both European and U.S.
paving concepts.
Designed for European
customers, the new AB500 and
AB600 extending screeds are
designed to pave widths from
2-9.5m, while the VR500 and
VR600 screeds have been
developed for the North
American market and for use
with the frms VISION pavers.
The VF500 features extending
units in front of the basic screed,
while the VR600 has extending
units behind the basic screed.
The upgraded AB500 and
AB600 extending screeds feature
a novel, infnitely variable single-
tube telescoping system. These
can also be equipped with
various compaction systems,
depending on the paver model
and application. Pavement
quality has been improved
through new features including
easily adjustable hydraulic side
plates, as well as hydraulic
crown adjustment which is
integrated as a standard feature,
controlled from the screed
console. Wear resistance of the
screed plates has also been
improved: the time required to
heat up the screed shortened
considerably; and the tamper
geometry optimised. The new
screeds have a vibration-
damped middle ascent designed
with low steps and an additional
hinged step, as well as a low
walkway.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION & RECYCLING
BOMAG continues to
develop its asphalt paver
range with the introduction
of a new top-of-the range
machine, the BF900C. This
features an S300M screed
and offers maximum paving
widths of up to 13m.
In addition, the frm is also
developing its smaller pavers
and is now offering the BF300C
with its new S340-2 screed, with
paving widths from 1.7-5m, as
well as a new compact paver,
the BF223C.The Fayat Groups
sales and marketing manager
Jacques Bonvallet said that the
machine retains the heavy
screed design from the earlier
Marini models. Theyve long
had the heaviest screeds on the
market and now this is one of
the key points.
He explained that a heavy
screed is crucial for achieving
high pre-compaction. The new
S300M screed is also equipped
with an effective heating
system, which features integral
aluminium plates to ensure
even and fast heat distribution.
In addition, the integrated
heating rods are protected by
the aluminium plate shells,
boosting service life and
reducing maintenance and
service needs. The S300M
screed is equipped with a
simple, but quick and secure
coupling system that allows
faster set-up times and reduces
downtime. Judith Rheingans of
BOMAG added, Because of the
wider screed, we reinforced the
machine.
Other features of the
machine are a new auger drive
and a scraper chain drive, which
allows high volumes of asphalt
to be conveyed smoothly and to
be spread effciently. The
BF900C is powered by a 160kW
diesel that meets Tier 4 Interim/
Stage IIIB emissions
requirements. The design of the
engine compartment is said to
provide the operator with a
good view of the work area and
full control of the paving
process. In addition to the
S300M screed, contractors can
also choose the S500 or S600
screeds, providing a range of
high capacity variants to suit an
array of construction projects.
Meanwhile the compact
BF300 paver comes with the
new S340-2 screed and which
also features the novel quick
coupling system. The screed can

Volvo fume extraction system
Volvo Construction
Equipments new extractor
for bituminous fumes will be
shown at bauma, where it
has been shortlisted for an
Innovation Award.
The company said the design
improves the operator
environment on its ABG pavers
by substantially reducing fumes
without signifcantly increasing
fuel consumption and noise, or
affecting visibility into the auger
channel.
The system, which is
available as an option on Volvo
CEs C-Series ABG pavers, is
said to introduce a new way of
removing fumes from the
operators working
environment.
By delivering 83% effciency,
the system exceeds the National
Institute for Occupational Safety
and Health (NIOSH) guidelines
which state that 80% of fumes
should be captured, said Volvo
CE.
Volvos results have been
independently certifed by an
environmental institute.
The system works by using a
fume intake, with a fan located
directly behind it, on both the
left and right-hand side of the
auger channel. The fan captures
and transports the fumes via
two tubes to the top of the paver
where they are then released.
This means that the air in the
operators working environment
is signifcantly cleaner than was
previously the case.
Due to the modular design of
the Volvo system, it can be
retroftted to machines already
in the feld, and the difference in
sound between the system being
on or off is just 0.3 decibels.

Versatile paving from GOMACO
GOMACO is introducing the
GT-3200 sidewalk paver
with an adjustable
aggregate base mold on the
front and a sidewalk paving
mold on the rear.
This three-track paver is
designed for zero-clearance
sidewalk rehabilitation projects,
to meet a contractors unique
request. The front-mounted
adjustable aggregate base mold
spreads the base aggregate for
the sidewalk. During the frst
pass, rock is placed on grade
and an auger spreads the
material, while three pan
vibrators ftted to the mold start
compaction. The base mold has
two heavy-duty hydraulic
cylinders that provide 356mm of
hydraulic lift for setting the
grade depth below the track line
and raising the mold for the
paving pass.
During the second paving
pass, the sidewalk is slipformed
with a minimum-clearance
trailing mold. The GT-3200
sidewalk paver has a
508mm wide by 4.3m long
folding conveyor. The conveyor
allows ready-mix trucks to
discharge from the street instead
of driving over existing kerb to
reach the paver. The hydraulic
pivoting conveyor has also been
designed to rotate 180 to load
concrete into the hopper from
either side of the machine and to
avoid obstacles associated with
zero-clearance paving. The
GOMACO-proven sidewalk mold
features hydraulic adjustable
sideplates to form the GOMACO
edge, while a trailing stainless
pan provides the superior fnish.
The sidewalk mold can also be
equipped with a bar inserter for
placing transverse bars into the
slab, if required by project
specifcations.
The GT-3200 sidewalk paver
features all-track steering for

costs.
The new machines being
offered are the 1900-3, 1300-3
and 1100-3 tracked pavers, as
well as the 1303-3 and 1103-3
wheeled pavers and these come
in addition to the existing

1800-3 also due shortly. The
EcoPlus system is an emissions-
reducing package that benefts
from the latest engine
technology and exhaust
after-treatment. Customers can
opt for the Tier 3/Stage IIIA-
compliant dash 3 machines or
the dash 3i pavers that meet the
latest U.S., European and
Japanese standards, which
allows the frm to offer the latest
paving technology both in
developed western markets and
in developing nations.
A number of features help
reduce fuel consumption. When
the paver is idling, its hydraulic
pumps for traction, conveyors
and augers, as well as the
screed compaction systems, will
automatically disengage after
one minute. Reducing drag also
makes it easier to start the paver
at low outside temperatures.
The tamper is driven by a
variable displacement pump
which delivers the correct
amount of oil needed for the
current tamper speed, improving
effciency.
The variable-speed fan is
driven by a viscous coupling that
adjusts in line with engine load
and ambient temperature, as
well as the temperature of the
oil and cooling water, further
improving effciency and also
cutting noise. A bypass circuit
allows the hydraulic oil to reach
optimum operating temperature
quickly, reducing fuel
consumption; if the oil
temperature rises above the
optimum level of 5070C, a
bypass diverts the oil through
the cooler assembly. The
improved fuel effciency is an
important point that will lower
running costs. According to
marketing director Roland
Schug, The machines offer fuel
consumption savings of up to
25%, which can save 7,000-
12,000 on fuel/year for the
average customer.
The machines are equipped
with the novel PaveDock
Assistant system, frst seen on
the 2100-3 paver introduced in
2012. This allows
communication between the
paver operator and the driver of
the feed vehicle and ensures
that the mix is supplied to the
paver safely and without jolts.
Signal lights on the paver and
the associated controls on the
paver operator's ErgoPlus 3
console are key components of
the PaveDock communication
system. The paver has two
highly visible signal lights
mounted on the right and left of
the hardtop that can tell the feed
machine operator whether it is
necessary to reverse or stop, for
example. In addition, Vgele
also fts the innovative
PaveDock push-rollers as an
option, a robust system that
absorbs impacts when the feed
vehicle docks onto the paver. A
sensor installed in the sprung
push-rollers sends a signal to
the PaveDock Assistant
whenever a feed vehicle has
docked onto the paver, while the
signal lights automatically
display a stop symbol and the
driver of the feed vehicle can
react.
The novel ErgoPlus operating
system has been further
improved with additional
features for the new dash 3
generation. The redesigned
four-colour display has a
high-contrast user interface for
readability in poor lighting
conditions, with self-explanatory
symbols understood in all
languages. In addition, the
driver's seat and the paver
operator's console on the
operator platform, as well as the
screed consoles, can be adjusted
as required.

Wirtgens new stabiliser range
ROAD CONSTRUCTION & RECYCLING
A new generation of
stabilisers is now available
from Wirtgen, with this
revised line-up following on
from the WR240 launched
last year. The new WR200
and WR250 models share
features with the WR240
and are said to set new
standards in cold recycling
and soil stabilisation.
The versatile WR240 suits
heavy-duty stabilisation of large
areas of non-cohesive soil, and
for the cold recycling of
damaged asphalt layers. This
model brought new features to
market and despite achieving
higher productivity than its
predecessor, tests in the feld
also show it to be more fuel
effcient, due largely to its
sophisticated engine
management system. The
machine has also been noted
for its large high visibility cab
and improved manoeuvrability,
with these features all now
being carried over into the
compact WR200 and top-of-the-
range WR250. The WR200 is the
smallest of the range and is
even more manoeuvrable than
the WR240, suiting duties on
small sites, while it offers
increased mobility as it requires
no special transport permits. In
contrast the powerful WR250 is
a heavy-duty machine designed
for stabilising heavy, swampy
soils.
In recycling and pulverisation
jobs the WR250 can be used to
turn roadways up to 250mm
thick into homogenous
granulate. An important new
feature is the ability to control
milling drum speed from the cab
for different applications, while
the milling drum is designed to
suit the machines high output.
This combination of new drum
and adjustable speed is said to
allow the WR250 to provide
high mix quality at a high feed
rate.

ROAD CONSTRUCTION & RECYCLING
MOBA says that its colour-
coded compaction roller
guidance system, the
MCA-2000, now comes with
additional functionality.
This package offers wireless
data transfer between the roller
and the offce and will allow
more homogeneous and
high-quality compaction of an
asphalt road surface. Marketing
manager Christine Seidel said,
The operator can see what has
been done, where the machine
has been and where it should go
next. At the end of the day the
data can be taken out of the
machine and used to make up a
report. You can also send the
data back to the offce in
real-time
Seidel explained that the
system can be used for a single
compactor or for a whole feet of
machines, integrating working
where several rollers are working
with a large paver or multiple
pavers are operating in echelon.
The system measures the
number of passes and the heat of
the mat, although it does not as
yet measure the compaction
level carried out. Seidel added,
We will be able to add an
acceleration sensor in the future,
but not yet.
Using the system means that
data can now be exchanged
between machine and offce,
eliminating the need to travel
from the offce to the
construction site. The data is
compiled into a report for quality
verifcation, documentation and
for tracking project progress.
The system uses temperature
sensors to measure the asphalt
temperature and GNSS
positioning of the roller to
ascertain the number of passes.
The driver can identify where
suffcient compaction has
already been performed and
where additional passes are still
necessary. The temperature
display ensures that compaction
is carried out while the asphalt is
in its optimum temperature
spectrum, preventing the
compaction of asphalt that is too
cold, which results in subsequent
road damage. The system is said
to be both easy to operate and
install.

CH550 cone crusher from Sandvik
Sandvik Construction says
its new generation compact
cone crusher provides
customers with optimum
performance and good
cubical shape, while
ensuring low operating
costs per tonne for a wide
range of materials and
applications.
The all-new patented
18.9tonne Sandvik CH550, is
based on the proven
HYDROCONE design, with the
CH550 combining the ability to
produce excellent shaped
products, in fewer
crushing stages.
The CH550
crusher has been
developed in
response to
customer
demands,
building on
the rock solid
foundation
of the
HYDROCONE
concept, says
Sandvik. With available power
of 330kW and a head diameter
of 1,100mm, it can be confgured
for either secondary or tertiary
crusher applications, and has a
wide performance range.
Sandvik said that in order to
facilitate greater reduction
ratios, effciency and
productivity, the CH550 offers a
number of features. It is
versatile, with one of three
eccentric bushings covering 90%
of the application range; the
Automatic Setting System, ASRi,
is included as standard.
It has effective power
transfer capability thanks to new
drive arrangements that gives a
precise lining of the V-belts, and
more than fve times prolonged
life time, says Sandvik, pointing
out that to minimise negative
environmental impact, and to
produce safer working
conditions, the CH550 comes
with no plastic backing. The
motor has a high energy effciency
classifcation, resulting in less
power consumption, thereby
minimising Co
2
emissions.
Compared to earlier models,
these features enable the
crusher to reduce emissions by
approximately 30tonnes each
year, equivalent to six persons
annual emissions (annual Co
2

consumption in Sweden) as well
as savings on operating power,
thereby reducing total power
consumption during the
crushers operational lifetime.
The ASRi system enables the
crusher to run at maximum
performance levels, and it
adjusts automatically to the
variations in feed conditions for
an ideal fnal product.

MOBAs novel drilling control
MOBA continues to develop its novel
MDS-2000 drilling system.
This package has already proven itself in use for
blast hole drilling in many operations and can now
be used to record the orientation of the machine
with GNSS antennae and the height using laser
reference. With telesupport, MOBA also offers fast
service through an internet connection.
By recording the machine orientation using two
GNSS antennae, the torsion on the machine can be
determined with very high accuracy and included
in the calculation of the drilling angle. This
simplifes and speeds up drill-hole planning. The
orientation can be determined without problem
during bad weather conditions and in darkness.
Height detection is offered using laser reference,
so drill holes can be drilled to the same depth,
even if the ground is uneven. Ensuring that the drill
holes are parallel and to uniform depth is crucial
for effective and effcient blasting, minimising the
risk of an uneven quarry foor and also reducing
problems of over- and under-sized product. This
also lowers the risk of fy-rock, improving safety.
A telesupport option allows the system to be
accessed remotely and, using an internet
bconnection, the MOBA service team can perform
updates and service quickly without requiring
on-site service calls. The MDS-2000 package
determines and stores drilling angle, depth, time,
GPS position and motor data of the rig, and the
system uses this information for effcient drill-hole
planning.

Kleemanns productive crusher
Kleemann is unveiling its
powerful and productive
new jaw crushers, the
Mobicat MC 110 Z and MC
110 R models.
These crushers add to the
existing EVO Contractor Line of
machines and have been
redesigned from scratch.
Marketing manager Mark
Hezinger said, We had a good
machine but it was heavy. This
new machine competes on price
with the competition and retains
the productivity and durability of
the previous machine.
A key feature of these new
machines is the hoisted
articulated crusher jaw. This
prevents blocking of coarse
material and removes fastening
elements for the crusher jaw
from the wear area. In addition,
the transfer from the pre-screen
or the feeder trough is designed
so that the material can tilt into
the crushing jaw and convey an
even material fow. With this
property and other features
Kleemann achieves outputs of
up to 300tonnes/hour.
Innovative new features include
hopper walls integrated in the
chassis to help lower overall
weight as well a fully hydraulic
crushing gap adjustment. Proven
systems on the machines include
the independent double-decker
prescreen, making the plants
even more diverse and effcient.
Drive systems similar to those
used on the Mobirex EVO series
of mobile impact crushers have
been employed and Hezinger
explained, The crusher is
directly driven and all the other
components are driven
electrically. We used to have a
hydraulic drive to the crusher
but now we have a direct drive.
This layout boosts effciency
and allows for optimal loading
of the crusher. The continuous
feed system (CFS) controls
provide more equal loading of
the crushing area, with
conveying frequencies of the
feeder trough and the pre-screen
adapted independently of each
other to the level of the crusher,
and helping increase
performance.

Hyundai unveils its 9A series
The new HL780-9A wheeled loader
from Hyundai Heavy Industries (HI) is
one of fve new 9A series wheeled
loaders being exhibited by the South
Korean company at bauma.
Like its fellow Hyundai HI 9A machines,
the HL780-9A complies with strict Tier 4
Interim/EU-Stage IIIB standards on engine
emissions. Its engine comes with an EGR
and diesel particulate flter (DPF). The DPF is
automatically and/or manually regenerated,
ensuring compliance with all NOx and PM
values. Hyundai HI says the high
performance DPF flters only need to be
cleaned after 5,000 to 6,000hours in
operation. The HL780-9A machines, like the
other 9A series wheeled loaders, are ftted
with various transmission and power modes
to allow the operator to customise the
switching characteristics, switching points,
working speed and hydraulic power to suit
the application. The different modes are said
by Hyundai HI to ensure the best torque/oil
fow for the job. The torque converter lockup
is standard from second gear upwards, and
the rigid transmission of the converter is said
to noticeably reduce fuel consumption,
especially for applications which involve a
lot of driving.
Hyundai HI says that some of the 9A
generation wheeled loaders are ftted with
automatic differentials and converter lock
up, which further reduces fuel consumption.
Lockable differentials are available as an
option for various confgurations. The
HL780-9A model has an automatic lockable
differential for the front axle as standard.

Ammanns new asphalt mixing plant filter - AFA 3018
on show at bauma 2013 is said to provide high
separation accuracy, improved flow distribution and is
virtually maintenance-free.
State-of-the-art CFD simulation is said by the Swiss

evenly, which improves their efficiency and useful life.
Key to high separation accuracy of the fine and
coarse filler is what is described as a new and innovative
pre-screener. The heightened degree of separation also,
in turn, improves the quality of reclaimed filler.
The new heat package for the AFA 3018 ensures that
the temperature loss in the filter never exceeds 10C due
to the presence of pre-heated cleaning air.

Sleipner will explain the
principle behind its
revolutionary method to
improve the overall
productivity in open-pit
mines, quarries and
construction sites.
The improvement is based on
moving excavators around the
site much faster than before,
and additionally the Sleipner
method saves time and money
and considerably increases the
excavators life, says the
company.
With Sleipner, it is possible to
move machines up to the weight
of 550tonnes.
Sleipner says its system is
essentially a dolly system,
consisting of large wheels, and
ramps with axles. One end of
the excavator tracks is driven on
the ramps so that the tracks are
lifted off the ground. Then the
excavator turns around, places
the boom on the bed of a dump
truck and lifts the other end of
the tracks by the hydraulic force
of the boom. As the whole
excavator is now above the
ground, it is easily transported
by the truck to the desired
location on site.
The whole transporting
process is carried out in a
fraction of time compared to
walking the same distance on
tracks, says Sleipner.
The Sleipner method will
reduce the transportation time
up to 80%, which increases the
effciency and productivity of the
excavator.

The existing Top Tower plants offer
capacities of 280-400tonnes/hour and the
eTOWER machines are designed with
output of 150 and 180tonnes/hour. The
units benefts from features used in the Top
Tower range such as the drying/fltering
tower system. This features an innovative
location for the flter and under-flter
hopper, above the dryer drum, which is said

units are just 2.5m wide, allowing them to
be shifted on roads in Europe as standard
loads. The design of the heating system
optimises the gas circuit and unlike
conventional systems, the duct between the
dryer and flter is short and insulated, which
minimises energy loss. The recovery fnes
circuit is said to be highly effcient. The fnes
are collected in the under-flter hopper by
gravity and then conveyed to the fnes

up to 0.07m.
This R25Z-9A is being made
available on the European
market with a glass ROPS/FOPS
cab, which has a spring-loaded
seat, foldable pedals, sensitive
joystick and storage space to
enhance operator comfort.
Hyundai HI says it has made
sure its new mini excavator has
good soundproofng: the noise
level for the operator inside the
closed cab is only 82dB(A), and
just 94dB(A) outside. The model
is also said to have easy access
for maintenance. All doors, faps
and hoods can be fully opened,
and all service points are located
in the same area for effective
daily checks.
The R25Z-9A has been ftted
with a long life plastic air flter

Case CEs midi-excavator marvels
Case Construction
Equipment (Case CE) says
the CX75C SR and CX80C,
its new and claimed market
frst Tier 4 Final emissions
standard midi-excavators,
offer more performance
power and greater operator
cabin comfort than previous
models.
Tier 4 Final requirements are
said to have been met through
the use of Cooled Exhaust Gas
Recirculation (CEGR) combined
with a Diesel Oxidation
Catalyst (DOC) system. Case CE
said there is no requirement for
the two new mid-excavators to
have a costly Diesel Particulate
Filter (DPF), so there is no need
for active flter regeneration that
consumes fuel.
The CX75 SR and CX80C
have completely redesigned
cabs, meeting ROPS and FOPS
Level II safety standards. Interior
space has been increased, as the
cab is 7% wider than the
previous CX75 and CX80. A
larger glazed area is also said to
improve visibility to the front of
the machine. Rear visibility has
been improved with the option
of a rear view camera.
For specifc applications that
require additional safety, Case
CE offers two different front
screen guards and a certifed
lifting and handling kit to lift
objects safely.
The CX75C SR and CX80C
are said by Case to generate 9%
more hydraulic power than their
predecessors, and 148litres/min
of pump fow compared to the
previous 136 litres/min. Cycle
times are said to be reduced and
digging force improved by up by
3% with the new midi-
excavators. In order to maximise
uptime, the new machines
feature a larger 120litre fuel
tank, said to be easily fllable
with the optional electric
refuelling pump. Quick and easy
maintenance is said by Case to
be another advantage of the two
new models.
With a choice of three boom

new platform
Sany America is offering a
new 500tonne class crawler
crane aimed to fll a gap in
its range that suits duties in
infrastructure projects. The
Sany SCC8500 is well-suited
for construction of 100m
wind towers and placing
2.5MW nacelles.
The SCC8500 can make these
lifts with a straight boom and an
offset wind tip, with no need for
a back mast. With a full
complement of attachments and
options, including fxed jib,
luffng jib and the SANY UltraLift
package, the SCC8500 can also
be used in infrastructure projects
such as bridges, waterways,
dams and sewage-treatment
plants.
Its novel auto counterbalance
equalisation (ACE) system
senses the boom angle and uses
hydraulic cylinders to
automatically adjust the position
of the movable upperworks
counterweight. The standard
ACE System has one upperworks
tray with hanging brackets and
20 upper sideblocks for
217tonnes of counterweight.
This design reduces overall
crane weight. The base machine
can be transported on 21 trucks,
but does not require a
counterweight wagon, making it
more mobile on the job site.
The optional UltraLift
package includes a second
counterweight tray with hanging
brackets and 36 upper
sideblocks for 394tonnes of
counterweight. A second pair of
hydraulic cylinders extends the
counterweight beam to 16m.
The counterweight beam is
supported by a back mast in the
UltraLift confguration.
The new UltraCab increases
operator performance and
comfort, with a wide feld of
reinforced glass for good views
of the load and job site. The
cabs steel frame has overhead
structural plates for added
security. The UltraCab tilts up
20 for visibility and it has a
high-resolution display showing
key parameters. The proprietary
load moment indicator
automatically detects lifting
capacity, boom angle, top height
and radius to ensure reliable
operation. A closed-circuit

operator views of all winches,
the counterweight and job-site
surroundings. An anemometer
on the boom tip monitors wind
speed and transmits the data to
the in-cab monitor. An
electronic level indicator
displays data on how level the
crane is. Ground pressure can
also be displayed on the control
panel.

talian construction equipment manufacturers will be in
abundance at bauma 2013, showcasing their impressive range of
machines and technologies based on a rich and proud history of
engineering excellence. The Munich-based shows status as the
largest construction equipment industry exhibition in the world
represents the perfect platform for Italian frms to increase their
customer base and enhance their global standing. The timing
of bauma 2013, with all its associated trading and networking
opportunities, could not be better for the Italian construction equipment
sector. According to research commissioned by Unacea, the Italian trade
association, there were 5,047 domestic construction equipment sales in
the frst nine months of 2012 down 29% compared to the same period
of 2011. Further Unacea-published fgures reveal that despite their global
turnover increasing by 6.4% in 2011 compared to levels hit in 2010, Italian
construction equipment company turnover is down 42% compared to
when the world fnancial crisis hit in 2008.
Like all construction equipment manufacturers, Italian companies
will be looking to secure lucrative sales and rental deals with clients
from BRICS countries where multi-billion euro highway infrastructure
spending has become the norm in recent years as their economies bloom.
A glance at a list of the Italian construction equipment manufacturers
at bauma 2013 instils great confdence in their ability to obtain vital new
business. Based in San Giovanni in Persiceto, Emilia-Romagna Simex, a
world-renowned manufacturer of top quality equipment for earthmovers,
already exports 80% of its production. Remaining in northern Italy, Milan-
founded Controls is among the worlds leading manufacturers of testing
equipment for the construction and civil engineering industries. In the
concrete machinery and equipment manufacturing market, Cifa has taken
its place among leading frms. Meanwhile, those in the market for easy-
to-use and effcient IT quarry management solutions can consider Ma-
estro. And any line-up of the worlds leading manufacturers of demolition
equipment and technologies must include Indeco.
The 2013 renaissance of Italian construction equipment
manufacturing is about to gather pace!

CIFA is introducing an
innovative hybrid truck mixer
in the shape of its new
Energya 9 model.
This features a conventional
9m3 capacity mixer drum
however the rotational drive
system is electric and the
machine is also equipped with a
lithium ion type battery pack that
is charged up while the truck is
being driven, assisted by
regenerative braking.
When the mixer stops on-site,
the drive to the drum is supplied
either by the battery pack or can
be plugged in to a mains power
supply. This allows the truck
driver to turn off the engine and
save on fuel, as well as reducing
exhaust emissions. Mixing and
unloading can be carried out
using the battery pack or mains
power, offering a signifcant
reduction in overall fuel use over
time.
For a feet of mixer trucks, the
fuel saving is likely to be
substantial and provide a
comparatively rapid payback
time for the hybrid technology.
There may be long term benefts
for the trucks engine too as this
will avoid the need to have the
diesel running at idle for long
periods on-site, reducing the risk
of cylinder wall glazing that can
occur when the engine load is
very light. As with more
conventional truck mixers,
customers can choose from a
range of suitably-sized carrier
vehicles to suit local market
requirements.
This system has been
developed in partnership with
Milan Polytechnic and CIFA has
fled a number of patent
applications for the technology. It
is one of several systems

Austrian frm Doka will be
showcasing at bauma its
frst system to be
specifcally designed and
optimised for cut-and-cover
tunnel construction. With
DokaCC (Cut-and-cover),
different types of traffc
tunnel, such as rail or road
tunnels, are said to be able
to be built quickly,
effciently and safely.
Doka said the creation of its
innovative tunnel system was
made possible only by the use of
high-tech construction materials
and products such as the
Composite formwork beam I tec
20. The choice of high-grade
steel members is said to have
enabled the weight to be
considerably reduced. These
attributes are said to make for
quick system set-up and great
ease of use on the site. The
Doka said the CC system
provides a high degree of safety
against base failure. Safe
shoring is possible whenever
needed, regardless of the type of
foundation. Another beneft
claimed by Doka when using
this variable tunnel formwork
system is that it is geometry-
independent and can be adapted
to even the most challenging
shapes and routes of a tunnel.
The tunnel formwork
traveller has an all-hydraulic
wheel system that is said to
allow it to be three-
dimensionally aligned with
millimetre precision, without
needing to be set down between
alignments. Even gradients of
much as 10% are claimed to be
easily negotiated. A slide-type
solution for the new stop-end
system saves time when
stripping out, and the integral
platform system and ladderways
are said to provide a high level
of safety. Other Doka formwork
solutions for transport
infrastructure at bauma are the

Productive PTC piler
High versatility is claimed
for the new PTC 20RHV
Vibrodriver piling unit, which
can drive and extract
profled sections of sheet
piling, H, concrete or
wooden piles. This highly
productive machine offers
an integrated solution:
including the rig with its
guiding pole, as well as the
novel Vibrodriver, hydraulic
hammer and press.
The equipment is said to cut
driving time sharply as the rigs
are ftted with powerful winches.
In addition, they require a
comparatively small space on
site and are highly mobile.
Precise positioning and
alignment is possible of the
profled sections and, in general,
there is no need to use a guide
for sheet piling or other piles. The
20RHFV has been specially
designed for use with piling rigs
that have a pole and it is
equipped with variable moment
technology (PTC patent). This
allows adjustments to be made
at any time on the worksite and
also provides precise control of
vibration. The variable moment
technology allows work to be
carried out in urban areas,
without affecting surrounding
structures. The 20RHFV is a
vertical Vibrodriver and features
a narrow centre width of just
450mm and its compact design
allows it to be ftted through two
sheet piles when driving a sheet
pile curtain. This lets users drive
or pull up piles more quickly,
without having to stop as often
for adjacent sheet piles.
The range of four PTC rig
models includes the PR20 model,
which is the most suitable for
supplying the Vibrodriver
20RHFV.

is said by the German frm
to have already provided
cost-effective and fexible
solutions for superstructures
for several years.
From project-specifc
solutions for tunnels, to system
applications in bridge
construction and heavy-duty
towers for the highest loads,
VARIOKIT is extremely
adaptable.
Now it can also be used for
the balanced cantilever method
with a few additional, newly
developed system components.
The new components for the
longitudinal direction of the
cantilever equipment facilitate
concreting of segments up to
5.75m in length, said to be
state-of-the-art in terms of
current methods. Existing system
components of the engineering
construction kit are used in the
lateral direction, while PERI
claims to have achieved
maximum adaptability for
different bridge cross-sections.
The result is cantilever
equipment with high fexibility
for shaping the bridge cross-
section, and the added beneft of
being simple to use.
PERI say the re-positioning
process for the next stage of
concreting has been made
extremely user-friendly, due to a
new kind of mechanism said to
require little extra manual work.
All system parts with the
exception of anchoring
equipment are available to rent
from PERI, making cantilever
construction very cost-effective.
Moreover, all components can
be used on further projects with
no additional work a claimed
major advantage even for
different kinds of engineering
works.

say the German manufacturer, and
the new machine features an easy-

as well as an improved hopper
(RS909), operating data clearly
displayed on the units patented in-

an effort to make maintenance and
servicing work easier. Swing doors,
for example, ensure easy access
and protect the machine operator.
And, because of its screw-on grille,
the new, optimised hopper (RS
909) makes it easier to replace
components. Also, thanks to the
improved shape of the pump,
hardly any concrete residue can
settle on the housing, which speeds

Deutz is now
offering a
range of new
low emissions
diesels
The new Tier 4 Final/Stage
IV emission certifed engine
range from Deutz is being
introduced. This complete
line-up of diesels meets the
coming noise and exhaust
emissions requirements in
Europe and the US and
offers capacities from
2.9-16litres.
The low emissions
performance is achieved using
the Deutz DVERT technology, a
package of technical solutions
that is used in modular form
with varying options to ensure
each engine capacity meets the
requirements. Compact design
and high torque output are
claimed across the range and
Deutz say that the engines offer
higher power density than
previous generation units,
allowing these diesels to take
the place of larger capacity
motors available earlier.
This design allows space in
an engine compartment for
hydraulics as well as the exhaust
fltration and after-treatment
systems. The range starts with
the compact 2.9litre TCD2.9L4
engine, a four cylinder unit
available in both turbocharged
and naturally aspirated versions
and which offers power outputs
from 30-55kW while being
designed to ft into tight
installations.
The TCD3.6L4 and TCD4.1L4
are also four cylinder units with
power outputs from 56-97kW
and 80-115kW respectively,
while the TCD6.1L6 and
TCD7.8L6 are six cylinder
engines available in ratings from
100-180kW and 160-250kW
respectively.
The TCD12.0V6 has power
ratings from 240-390kW and has
a V6 confguration, while its
larger size means it features
emissions systems from the
DVERT range including selective
catalytic reduction (SCR), as well
as cooled external exhaust gas
regeneration (EGR) and a
particulate flter. The V8
confguration, 16litre engine is
due shortly and will offer power
ratings up to 520kW, as well as
using similar emissions systems
to the V6 diesel. All the engines
are said to beneft from low fuel
consumption, helping to reduce
running costs for the owner and
offsetting the additional cost of

Volvo Penta offers new engines
Volvo Penta has said it is
ready for a follow-up of the
new Tier 4 Final engine
range and for displaying
engine features such as the
start/stop function, the
latest Volvo Penta
innovation that will help
operators to signifcantly
reduce their fuel costs.
Volvo Penta introduced its
range of engines compliant with
Tier 4 Interim/Stage 3B, all
based on the Selective Catalytic
Reduction (SCR) technology in
Janaury 2011, and while they
were well received by the
market, the off-road equipment
industry was aware that within
less than three years they had to
go from the Interim stage to the
Final stage, a substantial 80%
reduction of the NOx from 2.0
g/kWh to 0.4g/kWh, say
Volvo Penta.
They were also facing the
additional challenge of re-
designing their machines for
installing new engines and
after-treatment systems from
their suppliers.
To meet the new, stringent
emissions requirements of Tier 4
Final, and using the SCR
technology, Volvo Penta say its
new Tier 4 Final engine range
will meet customers primary
objectives: no re-generation,
limited installation challenges,
continuous optimised fuel
consumption and low operating
costs. With as few and simple
changes as possible.
The company says the light
EGR [exhaust gas recirculation]
system added to the engines has
provided further emissions
reduction.
It will, at the same time, help
keep the SCR catalyst operating
at an optimal temperature. By
avoiding a costly Diesel
Oxidation Catalyst (DOC),
installation is greatly simplifed,
say the company.
The Volvo Penta Tier 4 Final
engine range for off-road
applications consists of fve basic
engines, which will be on display
at bauma 2013, and will be ready
for delivery in 2014 although
Volvo Penta say they are ready

of the B30D has been
developed for a range of
applications such as use in
underground tunnel
construction and
underground mining, or
quarrying.
The shorter rear chassis and
single rear axle mean that the
truck is able to manoeuvre in
tighter spaces than the
conventional B30 machine,
suiting it to applications such as
underground operations, a
market segment where Bell has
a considerable experience. The
240kW Mercedes engine meets
emissions requirements, while
additional after-treatment
systems and special electrics can
be ftted if required to meet the
needs of a specifc tunnelling (or
mining) application. This
27tonne capacity truck has an
unladen weight of 17.25tonnes
and shares features with the
standard B30D such as its engine
and transmission, although the
17m
3
dump body is specially
built for this model. To ensure
parts commonality with the rest
of the Bell range, the rear axle
comes from the B40. The front
tyres are the standard size units
for the B30 while the rear tyres
are standard for the B40, again
ensuring parts commonality for
feet users.
The VersaTruck concept is
built along modular lines and
customers are able to choose
from a number of Bell ADT
features to best suit their own
requirements. Also included in
Bell Equipments extensive list of
VersaTruck solutions are ejector
trucks, fre trucks, water tankers,
lube trucks, fat deck trucks,
hooklift trucks, container trucks,
concrete trucks, waste handlers,
waste compactors and even an

the VersaTruck models and he
explained Providing the same
payload and engine performance
as our standard B30D, the 4x4
option offers a tighter turning
circle and shorter dimensions
compared to our traditional 6x6
ADT with their optimised
off-road capability. It therefore
suits customers needing
improved manoeuvrability, but
still needing the higher fexibility

UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION
Sandvik Construction is
launching its new Alpha 330
drilling tool system for
drilling and tunnelling.
It has been developed with
special features that control
power and ensure this power is
transmitted into the rock as
effciently, accurately and
economically as possible.
The company says that in
tests, in varying rock conditions,
the new design has been proven
to deliver a 30-80% increase in
rod life; provide more accurate
collaring and straighter
blast-holes, thereby delivering
greater advancement and
improved profle control. This
enables projects to be completed
more rapidly, as well as reducing
the overall cost of drilling and
tunnelling, says Sandvik.
The Sandvik Alpha 330 has
been designed and
dimensionally optimised to
replace the R32 connections,
which until now has been the
dominant 45mm system.
A key development of this
advanced new system sees the
drill string rod/bit connection
featuring an entirely new thread
design. Furthermore the Alpha
330 possesses a shorter thread
on the hexagonal rods in the
tool system resulting in a rigid,
integrated power-pack drill
string, which possesses superior
resistance to bending stresses,
thereby securing perfect energy
transfer, said Sandvik.
As part of the manufac-
turing process more steel has
been used for higher fatigue
strength, which further helps
ensure exact collaring and
straighter holes, as well as
delivering a 30-80% increase in
rod life.
Customer feedback on the
Sandvik Alpha 330 tool system
in global tunnelling projects is
said to have shown rod life has
been extended by at least 30%
