March 12, 2013 Lesson: Math Investigations 5.1.

1 Shape Pictures Objective: 1) Students will develop language to describe and compare 2-D shapes to real-world objects. Direct Instruction/Independent Practice: Hook students by showing them a pre-made shape poster on the chart paper. Have students look around the classroom, think about things in the classroom that might look like one of these shapes. Record their findings along with their name. Ask students to think about a school bus. Which of these shapes reminds you of a bus? Have students choose one of the shapes from the poster and think about what they might add to it to make a picture. Since we talked about a school bus, Im going to use this rectangle. Have students give you suggestions on what to add to make it look more like a bus such as squares for windows, circles for wheels. They can add detail like trees, other cars, etc. Explain that the students are going to draw a picture in their Math Journals around a shape that they choose. They can add other details/design it to make it look real. Model directions that they will be drawing the shapes into the journal. Write about the picture using shape words. Give example: I used a rectangle to make a school bus. Accommodations: If students are done, have them try to use two shapes to draw the next picture. Ask them how their sentences might change if they use two shapes. Assessment: Can students identify shape names? How do they talk about the shape?
