Introduction to Structural Geology Pre-requisites EMR 201

ESR 201

201 2

Course objectives: This course aims at study of : 1. Non-tectonic structures. 2. Tectonic structures. 3. Stress and strain in materials, and the relation between principal stress axes to faulting. 4. Mapping of geologic structures. 5. Global scale structures; mid-ocean ridges, deep sea trenches and transforms. 6. Theories of Earth's Evolution with emphasis on Plate Tectonic Theory, Global wrench tectonics and surge tectonics. Course description: Primary sedimentary structures, Primary Igneous structures, diapiric structures, impact structures, gravity-controlled structures, and intrusive and extrusive structures. Structures formed by ductile deformation: folds, foliations, lineations and kink bands. Structures formed by brittle deformation: faults, joints, shear zones and transfer zones. Divergent plate margins and rifting. Convergent plate margins. Conservative plate margins. Mountain ranges. Mechanism of plate tectonics. Course outcomes: The student is in a position to know the basic principles of structural geology and geotectonics. He will also learn the following: 1. How structures are formed. 2. Geometric and kinematic aspects of structures. 3. Map view of structures. 4. Construction of both geologic and structural maps. 5. Relation of global-scale structures to minor- and major-scale structures. Textbook: - Pollard, D. and Fletcher, R.C. (2005) Fundamental of structural geology. Cambridge University Press. Support References: - Park, R.G. (1983) Foundations of Structural Geology. Blackie, New York.
