erland,
Most Americans of all religions despise the
non-democratic imposition of anti-theism upon
the electorate by a tiny foreign funded elite. The
American Revolution was not just about taxes,
but about self government called Liberty, and
opposition to European corruption and values.
Subjects of European colonialism opposed the
same. But few recall that before there was state
colonialism, there was transnational corporate
colonialism, where overseas foreign corporations controlled local populations through the corruption
of their leaders, backed up privately funded mercenary violence. India first fell to corporate control,
long before it became a British colony
In 1616, Sir Thomas Roe, an envoy of the East India Company had declared to the Mughals that war
and trade were incompatible. But already in 1669 (even before the bans on the textile trade), Gerald
Ungier, chief of the factory at Bombay had written to his directors: " The time now requires you to
‘manage your general commerce with the sword in your hands” In 1687 came the reply from the
directors, advocating a Goa like British dominion in India, The French Dupleix was more or less of
similar view. Still earlier, in 1614, the Dutch Jan Pieterzoon Coen! , had written to his directors:
[rade in India must be conducted and maintained under the protection and favour of your weapons,
and the weapons must be supplied from the profits enjoyed by the trade, so that trade cannot be

to his parentage. The name or occupation of his father is not found, though one would have expected these facts

State power replaced corporate power in India only the company
experienced military difficulties, the British Navy becoming the
publicly financed military contingent replacement for the Coen’s
of the East India Company. But not all was left to the sword as
cultural institutions were also controlled by the foreign power, asa
‘means of corruption and paralysis of the population through
‘manipulation of the subject people's elite. The Anglo-Dutch were
therefore involved in “Building Moderate Muslim Networks” in
both Bengal and Jakarta,
Networks of local elite which supported the colonial structure, and
nullified the natural impulse to rebellion towards colonialism
found inherently in the Islamic faith. Elite corruption backed up by foreign military power has be
working colonial paradigm then for
enturies with state colonialism replaced recently with corporate
control once again as in its first emergence. But like then, corporate cultural imperialism is still
covered up, and lethal if necessary in the logic of the colonial imperative:
you can also look at empire as being about various kinds of exploitation and cultural imperialism,
Considered in that sense, the British did succeed in Kenya, in terms of exploiting and imposing their
culture on Africans.
It's hard to get concrete figures, because the British destroyed so many of the documents, But
regardless of the numbers, it's clear that they were interning an entire population and, in some cases,
doing their best to climinate them, So in my mind this is certainly something that should be
considered within the context of comparative genocide... How much was Kenya the exception and
how much was ita reflection of what was going on more broadly throughout the British Empire?
‘These policies and the personnel used to implement them were being moved around throughout the
empire. In many other former colonies there hasn't been this kind of bottom-up research that I did in
Kenya. We now know that they were doing some terrible things in Kenya and that there was a
cover-up. So the question is, To what degree was thatthe case in places like Malaysia and Cypress
and Oman and other parts of the empire?
