Measurement of Scour in Cohesive Soils Around a Vertical Pile-Simplified Instrumentation and Regression Analysis M. Ram Babu, V. Sundar and S. Narasimha Rao Journal of Oceanic Engineering, 2003

Objectives

To study the scouring in cohesive soils around pile using a laboratory model test and regression analysis.

Methodology

A simple model was constructed to simulate the clay bed with a pile (PVC pipe) embedded into it. Two conditions were simulated; scour due to currents; scour due to currents and waves to study the depth of scouring with time.

Important findings

Empirical equation is obtained for known conditions of pile diameter and flow approach velocity to obtain scour depth developed at any instant. A hyperbolic model has been utilized to obtain ultimate scour depths due to currents alone and combined action of currents and waves based on the test results of measured scour depths over limited time. The writers also suggest a few regression formulations, based on the data obtained, so as to predict field behavior under similar sets of soil and flow conditions. Only applicable to the similar soil type.

Limitations

A different type of soil can be used to model and to validate the regression formulations proposed by the writers.
